write-on effect stops rendering (Media Encoder 2024, Apple M2 Ultra, Sonoma)

Dear Adobe-Team,

I switched to a new Mac Studio (Apple M2 Ultra, Sonoma 14.4.1 - all updates installed as of today, 7.Apr 2024) and am using Adobe 2024 Media Encoder and After Effetcs (all updates installed as of today, 7.Apr 2024). A file I need for work and which I created on my old Mac Book Pro (2,4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, Monterey 12.6.6) can not be rendered. I reduced the problem to one effect: the write-on effect.

I deleted everthing else from the file (its attached) so you can see the isolated problem - I called the Komp "Does NOT work". The file is still rendering on my old Mac and on a Windows Computer (I borrowed one for testing) but stops the rendering on my new Mac Studio (and also on the new Mac Home with an M2 chip from a friend who tested it for me). I made a new Komp on the new Mac Studio and replicated the layer - Komp "Works" - this renders sometimes and sometimes not (once it stopped working when I activated "write on transparency" but then after the next restart this was working again...). Please check what causes the problem. It takes very long to find the specific layer and time stamp causing the problem in a complex animation project so I am worried if this happens for other projects and / or other effects too, it will cause alot of problems for my work. Also, I now still need my old Mac to render the project as the new one can't do it.

Would be great if you can get back to me.

Best wishes and sunshine from Vienna,

Lana

Thank you 🙂 Would be great if you find a fix. I use this quite often so I have many files that are affected.

Best

Hi @lanalauren,

Thank you for reporting this issue. We are able to reproduce it as well and have a ticket opened to investigate.

Thank you @EckiAME and @nishu_kush for your assistance!

Cheers,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

Thanks for sharing the file. You mentioned it works if you remove the Write-on effect. However, removing the Write-on effect didn't change anything on my end. It looks like the paint effect is causing the issue.

We're investigating the issue.

Thanks,

Nishu

Just to not leave this one open: Yes, in Ae Rendering the same problem occurs...

Perfect. Thank you. Is there anything I can do? Should I post the problem in another (Ae) Forum?

This looks like an After Effects problem to me. Asking our friends over at the After Effects Team and moving the item there…

Thank you for having a look into ir. So what do we do? 🙂

I verified your AEP. And it does not export from within After Effects either.

Does it still render correctly when exporting directly out of After Effects?
