HEVC video sources skipping frames, missing frames, jerky motion

HEVC video sources skipping frames, missing frames, jerky motion

After updating to newest After Effects beta (27.1.0 Build 21) from one from last week (10/16 or so), suddenly HEVC sources that were working fine immediately before the update, are not working properly. The frames appear to stick, often updating only every other frame, and sometimes not updating for several frames in a row. I noticed this does not occur with any other type of video codecs that I’ve seen.

Using Windows build. Clearing all caches multiple times. Hardware accelerated decoding was enabled. Disabled and restarted After Effects and cleared cache, same result. Occurs in brand new project with only one of the affected video sources as well.

Works in After Effects 26.5.0 Build 89 (thanks for having the save copy as 26.x in the betas!!)

    Hi @adzm,

Thanks for the detailed report, and sorry for the trouble. We’d like to reproduce this on our end. Could you please share the following?

    1. A sample HEVC file that shows the issue. A short clip is fine, and a download link works.
    2. Your system details: Windows version, GPU model, and GPU driver version.
    3. MediaInfo output for the file: codec profile, bit depth, chroma subsampling, frame rate, and whether it is variable frame rate.
    4. Whether other HEVC files are affected (for example, from different cameras or encoders), or only this source.
    5. A short screen recording of the skipped frames, if that’s easy for you.
    6. Whether the issue is also reproducible in Premiere Pro, if you have it installed. If so, please tell us which version.

We’re keen to dig deeper and understand this issue.

    Thanks,
    Mayank

    1. I zipped up a simple After Effects project that has the affected video in the (Footage) folder. You can get it here https://adzm.net/adobe/weird_hevc.zip . Please let me know when you have so I can remove it from my host.
    2. I disabled GPU everything to try this. Windows version is 24H2 Build 26100.8875 - Intel UHD Graphics 6 driver 31.0.101.2141 and NVIDIA Quadro T1000 driver 32.0.16.1060
    3. Included in the mediainfo.txt file in the .zip above
    4. It does affect most other HEVC videos of mine, from different sources and encoders as well
    5. I included two screen recordings in the .zip above, weird_playing.mp4 which shows when I play the preview, and weird_pgdn_each_frame.mp4 which shows the strange behavior as i go frame by frame. Rendering out the project usually just causes it to get stuck on one frame and not change at all.
    6. I’m not really familiar with Premiere Pro, I just mess around with After Effects for a few things, but I can try if you still need it.
