Bridge Workflow fails on PSDs with masks, locked layers, or bitmap mode

I’ve been trying to use the Bridge Workflow panel to automate modern web exports from layered PSD files — converting from FOGRA39 to PNG or WebP in 2000px output — and after hours of testing, I found that the system only works reliably with basic JPEGs.

PSD export fails when:

  1. The file is in bitmap (1-bit) mode.

  2. Any layer has a mask, even if it’s the only layer.

  3. There’s a locked background layer, even hidden.

  4. The bottom layer is locked, regardless of content.

→ These files are silently skipped in export. No error. No result. Nothing.

Expected behavior:

If I uncheck “Transparency” in export settings, I expect Bridge to:

  • flatten the image automatically,

  • ignore masks, hidden layers, or locked backgrounds,

  • and export reliably to PNG or WebP.

Instead, the system quietly fails — and requires manual preprocessing in Photoshop, like adding a dummy layer and merging visible layers, before it works.

Workflow panel is unusable for modern export:

  • WebP is not supported at all.

  • PNG export fails unless PSDs are flattened manually.

  • JPEG is the only format that works reliably — but that’s no longer acceptable for modern responsive or color-managed web workflows.
