Ever since I updated to Substance Painter v 12.1.0 build 5529 I've been having performance issues. Especially when saving larger files and painter hangs when I try to close it.

I’m unsure what is causing the issue. Before latest update to 12.1.0, I have not experienced any issues like this. I’m on win11 pro latest updates as of 2026/07/03. Painter is installed on a 2tb gen4 nvme (its my OS drive) and my work files are done on a gen5 samsung pro 9100 drive. Previously saving files was fairly quick, even files over 5gb in size. But now when I save I have to wait as it hangs for a while (1-1.5 minutes) before the save completes. This only happens on large files that is over 1gb in size. When I exit after working, then it also hangs a while before closing, or it just hangs indefinitely and I have to force close painter with task manager. I’m unsure if it is a windows issue, or gpu driver issue, or painter issue.

My drivers are up to date. Latest Nvidia studio drivers (v.610.62) through nvidia app. Nvidia app overlays are disabled and no performance settings for apps are done through the nvidia app. System: r9 9950x3d, 64gb ddr5, Rtx 5070ti and above mentioned nvme drives.

I have updated to the latest substance painter version and there’s an issue where painter abruptly takes up high cpu and gpu usage even though there aren’t any procedurals or any sort of layers added to any object, it also fails to close properly upon closing and just stays in the background causing huge cpu gpu usage hikes and I am hitting 85 percent on 64 gigs of ram while working on nothing!. Please fix these issues and also, your substance assets library is so damn laggy while trying to load up anything, if I change icon sizes, that is causing me to wait 5 mins almost for it to stop lagging and respond properly. PLEASE FIX THIS!

    Also, my specs,
    Ryzen 9 5900x
    Rtx 3080 10gig
    64Gb DDR4 Ram
    Installed on NVME SSD

same here , super low performance ,very long to save projects , and some projects were crasshing when opening them. after updating with yesterday nvidia drivers , the crash stopped , but the lag is huge and cache usage much higher.

Same here, saving files takes upwards of 30 seconds for a very simple project and minutes for more complicated one.

Latest Studio drivers, R7 9800X3D, 64GB DDR5, RTX 4090, 2TB Samsung 980Pro (with plenty of space and health).

The VRam usage is also astronomical, on the simple project (im talking like 5~ fill layer, no generators/filters etc) it will use all 24GB Vram and 40+ GB of Ram just to do a single stroke. Its almost unusable in its current state.

    Hi everyone,

Depending on the hardware, we’re indeed facing significant slow downs and we’re working on it. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and we’ll let you know as soon as the 12.1.1 bugfix is out.

    I’m experiencing the same issue.

After updating to version 12.1.0 build 5529, saving files now takes an extremely long time. GPU usage has also become very high while painting, causing a lot of lag and stuttering.

I hope the official team can address this issue as soon as possible, as it is seriously affecting the Substance Painter user experience.
