P: AI-based masks as part of presets not usable on Windows

With the latest Adobe update, all AI-based masks (e.g. sky, subject) that are part of a preset are updated automatically when applying the preset to a new picture or when hovering over the preset to get a preview of what the changed picture will look like.

So far, so good. On our M1 MacBook Pro, everything works like a charm. Previews are created instantly. When you click on a preset, all changes are applied immediately. Works perfectly in LrC, LR, and Camera RAW. However, not on an iPad and not on the smartphone and we were not able to get an answer from someone at Adobe when this will be supported.

HERE COMES THE REAL P'ROBLEM.

When you try to use the same function on a Windows 11 machine, IT DOES NOT WORK.

Generating a single preview can take up to 2 minutes. Alternatively, the GPU produces an error message, the application freezes or the software tells you that the AI-masks could not be computed. When you click on a preset, a window appears telling you that settings are being applied and that it will take a few seconds. However, same behaviour. It can take up to two minutes. 50/50 change of getting an update picture or an error message. It does not work, neither in LrC (Windows), Lr (Windows) or Camera RAW (Windows).

While on the Mac everything runs like a charm I can't help but get the impression, that someone forgot to test this function on Windows before releasing the software.

Can someone please tell us when this function will reallly work for Windows?

Does the select subject and select sky inference takes the same amount of time if one to invoke the select subject and select sky from the masking panel? For the select subject, try the select subject on both a portrait and non-portrait photo.

And what is the inference timing afterwards? Check out this https://helpx.adobe.com/ca/camera-raw/kb/select-subject-sky-delay.html that might affect your system if you have a Intel GPU.

The driver is up-to-date isn't guaranteed if it is based on the Windows driver update check only. Consider follow https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-cc/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-4 to manually check GPU driver updates from the vendors.

"NVIDIA GeForce GT 640" was released June 5th, 2012. That was 10 years ago.

Hi Simon!

Ok, did everything you recommended. Used configuration 1. Before the driver update, selecting the subject took between 12-16 sec, selecting the sky about 3 sec. After the driver update double the time.

When creating the masks, CPU usage was between 90-100%, RAM usage around 80-90% (no other applications were open), and - surprisingly - the GPU usage was 1%. I also made LrC use the GPU for development, but that did not make any difference.

Hi Ben! Thanks for jumping in.

Configuration 1:

CPU 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700H   2.30 GHz
RAM 16,0 GB
System 64-Bit, x64-basierter CPU
Edition Windows 11 Home
Version 21H2
GPU: Intel Iris Plus Graphics (driver is up-to-date)

When using the feature, RAM and GPU are maxed out within seconds.
Will add other configurations as soon as I get them.
Maybe there is a minimum hardware configuration for this feature, but I could not find any.

Hi everyone, I'm sorry for the trouble!  We are not able to reproduce this problem.  We suspect that it may be specific to particular GPUs.  If you are experiencing this problem it would be very helpful if you could share with us what GPU is in your computer, and what GPU driver version is installed.

(If you don't know how to locate that information, a quick internet search for "how to find gpu on windows" will provide you with links to many resources explaining how to do it.)

Thanks,

Ben
