P: LrC 15.5 Video Files Issues (Windows)

I updated to LrC 15.5 a few hours ago.  Since then LrC has problems with video files.  The first problem I noticed was that when I tried to synchronize a folder that had two new video files.  After a couple of minutes I got the error message “An unknown error occurred while reading the video file. (2)”.  I had just completed those files with DaVinci Resolve so I went back and produced the same files again to check if DR had made an error.  When I tried again with the new files but got the same errors.  I was able to play both videos without any issue using VLC Media Player, so they seem to be OK.  I then shutdown LrC and did a backup including optimizing the catalog, and then restarted it to see if that made any difference, but same error.  Then I started looking at other videos that were already in LrC and found that when browsing them in the Library module, most of them pop up a message “There was an error working with the video”.  They will not play in LrC but work fine with VLC Media Player.

Prior to upgrading to 15.5 I did not experience any of these errors. Is anyone else seeing these problems?

I have the same problem with LrC 15.5. Can’t play previously imported MOV or MP4 video files and also can’t import MOV or MP4 video files. Called LR support and they said they will no longer be supporting video playback or importing in LrC. I don’t know how they can get away with that. I have thousands of video files that are organized in LrC and now I can’t see them natively in LrC or continue to organize future videos using LrC. Time to go find a new app to replace Lightroom.

Same here with Pixel 8 and Pixel 10 videos. They worked fine in LrC 15.4, they play fine using the GPU in MPC-HC. Please fix, this has been open for almost a month now and is getting ridiculous. This is not how you bug fix professional software.

When trying to play iphone video error message on screen “There was an error working with the video”

When trying to import iphone ,mov videos, error window on screen “An unknown error occurred while reading the video file.” In the import file list the videos are shown “Preview unavailable for this file.”

Corrections tried: deleted subfolders in %AppData%\Adobe\dynamiclinkmanager and %AppData%\Adobe\dynamiclinkmediaserver.

Purged cashe x2 in Preferences - Performance

Some 2-3 weeks ago it was possible to play and import iphone videos.

Tried to activate HEVC codec in PC, and even bought  Microsofts HEVC Video Extensions for 0,99€. This did not help at all.

NVIDIA display driver updated some weeks ago.

Same here. I thought it might be Windows but it isn’t.  I went back to Ver. 15.4.1 and everything is fine. Lightroom has no problem with video, only  LrC.

Same issue in 15.5.1 with Sony MP4 videos from an A7CR - attempting to import fails with a “"An unknown error occurred while reading the video file". Previously worked fine.

Adobe has acknowledged this bug with video in LR 15.5 on Windows:

    https://community.adobe.com/bug-reports-674/p-lrc-15-5-video-files-issues-windows-1635342/index3.html?sort=oldestFirst#comments

The only known workaround is to roll back to 15.4.1. Add your vote and constructive comment to that bug report, and you’ll be notified when Adobe releases a fix.

I have the same problem with LrC v15.5 and v15.5.1 under windows:  Any import of videos from iPhone results in error messages. roll back to v15.4.1 works fine again, withoud adapting the database.

Nikon Z5II MOV files (H.265, 8-bit 3840×2160/30p) work correctly in Lightroom Classic 15.4.1, but fail with “An unknown error occurred when reading the video file” in both 15.5 and 15.5.1. By contrast, MP4 files (H.264,1920×1080/30p) work normally. The H.265 files play normally in Media Player Classic. The problem occurs in a new Lightroom catalog and persists with GPU acceleration enabled/disabled and after clearing the video cache.

Let’s hope that if enough of us grumble about this ,Adobe will sort this - soon!

I have just come across this as well when trying to import DJI Mini 4 Pro mp4 files. I’ve always been able to import these in the past, H265 10bit format. Windows 11 (with additional HEVC codecs installed) Downgraded to 15.4.1 and it works again as it used to.

Absolutely the same for me Scott, apart from using the MiniPro 5!
