P: LrC 15.5 Video Files Issues (Windows)

I updated to LrC 15.5 a few hours ago.  Since then LrC has problems with video files.  The first problem I noticed was that when I tried to synchronize a folder that had two new video files.  After a couple of minutes I got the error message “An unknown error occurred while reading the video file. (2)”.  I had just completed those files with DaVinci Resolve so I went back and produced the same files again to check if DR had made an error.  When I tried again with the new files but got the same errors.  I was able to play both videos without any issue using VLC Media Player, so they seem to be OK.  I then shutdown LrC and did a backup including optimizing the catalog, and then restarted it to see if that made any difference, but same error.  Then I started looking at other videos that were already in LrC and found that when browsing them in the Library module, most of them pop up a message “There was an error working with the video”.  They will not play in LrC but work fine with VLC Media Player.

Prior to upgrading to 15.5 I did not experience any of these errors. Is anyone else seeing these problems?

Interesting that this has been around for almost a month without official feedback from Adobe?

I can reproduce this same bug on my PC on both 15.5 and 15.5.1 - affects newer mobile phone videos as well as footage from my GoPro Hero Black 13. Downgrading to 15.4 fixes it so definitely not an issue with my PC setup. When will this be fixed???

On import Lightroom Classic fails to generate the thumbnail preview and gives an "unknown error occurred while reading the video file" error and fails to import Nikon Z8 H.265 10-bit video clips.

    Lightroom Classic 15.5 and 15.5.1
    Windows 11 version 25H2 Build 26200.9278.
    Camera model is Nikon z8

    Step-by-Step Instructions:

    1. Set Nikon Z8 to record video in H.265 10-bit (MOV) format.
    2. Copied .mov file off camera card and to a computer hard drive location to eliminate an issue with importing for the CFExpress card.
    3. Opened Lightroom Classic and selected Import. Navigated to hard drive location with .mov files. Lightroom Classic shows the file name. Instead of showing a preview the text “Preview unavailable for the this file” is displayed.
    4. Check marked and clicked import
    5. Import results window is next displayed with the following text. “Some import operations were not performed”. “An unknown error occurred while reading the video file (2)”. This is followed by a list including the names of the H.265 10-bit files that were not imported.
    6. Closing the window shows the message “No photos in previous import”

Expected result: The video file should generate a preview thumbnail and import successfully, as it did in the previous Lightroom versions. Last version where this worked is 15.4.1.

Actual result is the file fails to load with unknown error. Have also noticed that in Library mode that LRc will display different error message when displaying previously imported H265 10-bit files. Assume that this is related to the import issue.

Current workaround: Reverting back to LRc 15.4.1 allows import of H265 10-bit video files generated by the Nikon z8. And limited play back in Library module. Have also confirmed that version 15.5 can import H.264 8-bit video clips generated by the Nikon z8. It is just failing to import H.265 10-bit. It also will not import H.265 8-bit.

The crazy thing is that this bug continues to be tagged with “Needs more info”(??). Really?

I keep sending “report bug” every single time I’m importing a new wedding - with the error message. This is getting ridiculous.

@AndreapennA Photography Impacting my wedding workflow massively and 23days and still no fix!

Based on years of past observation here, and given you can work around the bug by rolling back to 15.4.1, I think it’s likely that Adobe won’t release an emergency patch for this (15.5.2) but rather will deploy a fix in the upcoming release.  If they stick to the same schedule as in past years, that will be the beginning of the Adobe Max conference, the week of November 8.

(I’m just giving an educated guess, so don’t shoot the messenger.)

Problem not fixed with update LrC version 15.5.1 See my other posts in this thread regarding videos not loading or those already loaded into LrC, not playing.

Disappointing - in the absence of a target resolution date for this SEV1 problem, I’m going to have to abandon ship for my project. Any suggestions for a product I could replace it with?

No, I do not have any idea. The only possible action is to step back to 15.4.1

I can reproduce the issue. After updating to version 15.5, the support for H.265/HEVC videos disappeared. The import window was not able to present the previews and later I have got a dialog listed all the failed H.265 videos. The import of H.264 videos still works. After downgrading to 15.4.1, I was able those videos. The updating to 15.5.1 the import of H.265 videos fails again. Another downgrade to 15.4.1, it works properly again.

@Jorge31291960f9zv I opened a support ticket with Adobe, and they DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE PROBLEM IS WITH LIGHTROOM 15.5

Ignore what Adobe customer support tells you -- they are often pretty random and not to be trusted. Reports in this section of the forum (Bug Reports) are in general the most reliable indication of the status of bugs.  The forum moderators ensure that this forum only contains bugs acknowledged / being investigated by Adobe. (I don’t work for Adobe.)
