P: Map markers are not updated when photos are moved in the map module

Just starting today the Map module is leaving behind markers for a photo or photos that have been moved. It also continues to show markers for photos that have been opened but are no longer in the directory being worked in. If I leave LRC and come back in, all is well but I've never had to do this before. It is more of an annoyance than a major issue, but it does clutter up my screen while moving things. I am in the process of locating old photos that have inaccurate or no geotagging and this behavior is slowing me down. I’m running 15.3 on a MacBook Air. Has anyone else seen this or have a suggestion of how to fix this behavior?

It appears that the Map module was coded against an old, deprecated version of the Google Maps API, and the Google Maps API implementation changed very recently. I’ve tested versions back to LR 12.5 and the Map module misbehaved in the same way, indicating a change on Google’s side.

     See this bug report:

Maybe add a precise step-by-step of your symptoms to that bug report and vote for it?

Thanks for the recipe, @johnrellis  I have logged a bug with the team.

I am seeing the same bug. It is good that Rikk has logged a bug report.

For me, here are the step-by-step instructions:

    1. Open Lightroom Classic in Lightroom Classic 15.3. (I observe the same problem in Lightroom Classic 15.2.1 and 15.0)
    2. In the Library Module, select a folder (or keyword or collection).
    3. Then switch to the map module. The pins of the photos in the selected folder (or keyword or collection) are in the proper place.
    4. Go back to the Library Module. Select a different folder (making sure that only one folder is selected, and that you have not accidentally chosen two folders)
    5. Go back to the Map module. Observe that photos from both folders are now seen on the map.

Re-starting Lightroom Classic doesn’t always clear the error. Resetting the preference file seems to always clear the error, but after you reset the preference file, and go through the above steps, the problem returns.

Lightroom Classic 15.3 (problem also appears in 15.2.1 and 15.0), Windows 11

My map module has gone haywire. If I launch Lightroom Classic, select a folder and then go to the Map Module, the pins are displayed in the proper location. Excellent! Then I go back to the Library Module, select a different folder, and then go back to the Map Module, I would expect to only see the pins for photos in the 2nd folder. (note: only one folder is selected, I have checked that several times) But the Map Module shows pins from both folders. And I can’t seem to figure out how to make it get rid of showing the pins from the first folder. The only way to “clear the pins” is to exit LrC and then reset the preferences. But if I do that, with the new preference file, and repeat the steps, the problem returns. Same problem if I do this process with keywords instead of folders, or if I do it with collections instead of folders.

There’s another problem, however. Normally, if you zoom in on an area, the pins are separated (so for example, at one spot I have a pin showing 10 photos and nearby another pins showing 5 photos). And normally, if you zoom out, these two nearby pins will collapse into a single pin showing 15 photos. But now, with this issue, I see the pins do not collapse into a single pin with 15 photos, the two pins overlap as I zoom out. See screen capture. No amount of zooming out will cause these two pins to merge instead of overlap.

So what is the solution here? I am mystified. Does anyone have any thoughts at all?

This is happening to me as well, and driving me a little crazy.

@Rikk Flohr_Photography, @Sameer K, I provided a bug recipe above for quickly reproducing this problem -- please move to bugs:

I see the same misbehavior on LR 15.3 / Mac OS 26.4.1. To reproduce (see the attached screen recording):

    1. Open the attached catalog.

    2. Select both photos.

    3. Go to the Map module and ensure the map pin for the photos is displayed.

    4. Drag the photos from the filmstrip to a different nearby location on the map.

    5. Observe there are now two map pins (incorrect).

    6. Go to Library and back to Map, and observe the two map pins are still there (incorrect).

    7. Restart LR and observe there is no just one map pin (correct).

BTW, I have restarted my computer, restarted LRC and reset preferences but the behavior continues.

Does this still occur after restarting the computer?  If so, it would be good if you posted a screen recording of the entire LR window showing this misbehavior:

I am running LRC 15.3 on a MacBook Air. I’ve never experienced this until today. If I move a photo in the map module the original marker is left behind until I exit and restart LRC. It gets very cluttered very fast. If I change photo directories, the markers from the previous directory are also left behind until I exit LRC and restart. I have been using map module to geotag lot of older photos where I forgot to, or couldn’t, geotag as I went. I don’t think I’ve changed any settings and I installed 15.3 in April and have been using LRC constantly since then. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a fix?
