P: Unable to advance to the next photo

Why no one writes about the fact that in develop mode, after any manipulation with a photo, it is impossible to go to the next photo in the feed? You go, but the photo remains the same as it was, you have to go back and only then go to the next photo. This is a global problem!!  Anyway, I did some research and I realized why many people are silent about it, because this problem occurs only when using the +\- buttons on any keyboard, even on macbook !!!!. If you use only mouse or touchpad, there is no problem with photo transition. That's why many photographers don't pay attention to it, because they don't use the keyboard. Therefore, ADOBE does not react in any way.

@TomT60 , your symptoms are different than nearly everyone else here, which suggests that perhaps you're tripping over a different bug.

Of the 200 posts here, you're the only so far to report the onset of the symptoms after deleting photos within Develop.

And you and Shaun Spiteri Photography are the only ones reporting the symptoms in LR 12 as well as LR 13.

All the posts in this thread are dated 10/11/23 or later, the day after LR 13 was released. Further, 10 people report successfully rolling back to LR 12.5, and no one else reports rolling back and still experiencing the symptoms (vitalyn38151610, Martinomac, Rafael _ Oz, ondrejb47127146, nmphotography, Jimi Ferrara, yurii32033693wvln, Wenbo 33049776zijx, Kbarre, Wim Smets).

Of course, these nasty bugs need to be fixed at priority, but it's important to understand the similarities and differences among the different reports.

@TomT60, "I noted that - although a few do indeed mention the "press x to mark" thing - most still say they have the same issue as me... which is deleting in develop does not work."

That thread is umambigously about a specific workflow of marking photos rejected and then invoking the Delete Rejected Photos command (Cmd/Ctrl Del/Backspace) in Develop. Of the users other than you in the thread saying they have a problem, 7 explicitly refer to Delete Rejected Photos or its shortcut, and 4 later posters say they have the "same problem", "ditto", "exactly the same issue". When someone writes "same problem", that is necessarily referring to previous posts.

---

Marc Merlin, the original poster, " I'm not sure, but deleting photos ... seems to precede the appearance of the problem."

Just Shoot Me replies that the problem has been reported in other threads, linking to another report that clearly states Delete Rejected Photos. That reply is marked as the correct answer and is highlighted.

Mark Merlin replies "Thanks!"

TJW250 reports it occurs with Cmd Del in Develop.

Bob Somrak mentions the workaround of doing it from Library.

hoendisasd confirms Ctrl Backspace in Develop causes the problem.

skirmisser reports having "exactly the same issue".

googull reports "ditto for me".

lindavs0362 reports it occurs after doing Cmd Del in Develop.

Uksnapper reports problem with Cmd Del in Develop.

Andy Vitus says problem invoking Ctrl Del in Develop.

Copernicus987 says "same problem".

belindaj_LR confirms in her second post it's "marking rejects" and "delete rejects completely" in Develop.

Nero69-gq8aq8 "Same problem here... Only time it seems to be a problem is if I delete in Develop mode." In the contex, "same problem" clearly refers to the previous posts.

1. When I use the left and right keys on the keyboard to quickly switch pictures, and I use the plug-in written by lua to modify some parameters of the pictures, this problem may occur
2. My guess is that when I switch to the next picture before, LR will probably modify the parameters of the previous picture, resulting in LR automatically helping me cut back to the previous picture. This situation is likely to occur when the switching speed and the modification speed are fast.
3. There is also the LR internal when the left and right buttons are executed. Discard some lua commands. Or correct the selection list below when lua switches images

I'm not sure what that 'lua plugin' is, but Lightroom keeps up with me even if I switch as fast as I can in the film strip.

I'm glad you noticed my problem. The lua plugin is an enhancement tool plugin that I coded with lua scripts.

Hi johnrellis,

Thanks for that response, it’s tiring getting attacked online for nothing or trying to help. Whatever that bug is I’ve gotten rid of it and can get work done so best of luck to the rest!

[Lightroom Classic Bugs]<> Re: P: Unable to advance to the next photo<>

@PatrickInSeattle<>, thanks for sharing your experience -- when faced with nasty bugs that only some experience, more information helps to narrow down causes and workarounds quicker. Your post didn't in the slightest imply that your experience would necessarily apply to others. (And no, I'm not an Adobe apologist<>.)

Cheers,
Patrick

This massive Adobe cluster-frack has got me very skittish on updates. I know it's not specifically on-topic, but it's close enough to ask: Has anyone updated to Photoshop 25.1? If so, are you having any troubles?

Hello again. I WAS actually going to say the posts in reply to the one I mentioned were irrelevant, as I was replying to the one I mentioned and saying I had the same issue (anything else is immaterial. He has the issue, I have the same one... that's what I was mentioning. That's it)

However after reading all the replies to that post that you listed, I noted that - although a few do indeed mention the "press x to mark" thing - most still say they have the same issue as me... which is deleting in develop does not work. Switching to library mode DOES (and some people in the replies you mentioned say this should be done... others say they "shouldn't have to switch to library mode to do this" to which I agree).

So either way - the issue mentioned by many people AT THAT TIME is still present now... and that is: Deleting photos in develop mode causes the image in the preview window to "stick" after navigating, either with keyboard or mouse, and in either Lightroom 12.5 or Lightroom 13.0.1.

I may not be using these forums correctly (they are a bit messy in terms of replies/order of posts) but the fact remains - at least two (and it seems, several) people mentioned this exact issue in 2016. I've experienced it recently as have many people... so either it was indeed fixed as you say back then, and reared its head again in the last year or so - or, by coincidende, no one bothered to write about it after 2017/2018, yet more people are mentioning it again now. I don't think the coincidence I mentionee is likely enough in this case, therefore I think it was probably fixed before and now something is causing it for even more people

I wrote, "That previous thread was from Dec 2016, with about a dozen people reporting similar symptoms associated with marking photos as rejected and then deleting them while in Develop."

@TomT60  replied, 'There is NO mention of marking photos for removal, simply switching between photos (and between library and develop modules)"

That 2016 thread, to which you posted on 10/8/23, has 22 posts prior to yours, the last on 2/27/17, 16 of which explicitly mention deleting or rejecting (note that the oft-mentioned shortcut Ctrl/Cmd Backspace invokes Delete Rejected Photos). The bug was fixed in LR 2015.9 (6.9), which was released 3/7/2017:

"FIXED – Develop Module Locked after deleting images while using two displays.
FIXED – Unable to change the image after deleting a rejected photo in develop module."

There were no further posts in that thread prior to yours on 10/8/23. Invariably, if Adobe says they fixed a bug and the fix didn't work for some people, they post back immediately.

All these facts are why Adobe employee Rikk Flohr replied to your post, "You’ve posted to an ancient thread. It is highly unlikely that the issue described in this thread, though not impossible, is the same one you are currently experiencing."

--------
Quotes from the 2016 thread:

Post 1: (You quoted this one in full) "I'm not sure, but deleting photos (using the LR interface, not the file system of course) seems to precede the appearance of the problem."

Post 3: "The sequence of events that make it happen for me are: Hitting "X" to reject photos, Hitting Command Delete to delete them, then, whatever was the last photo to have been displayed in the develop module (even if it was just deleted), it gets stuck on the screen"

Post 4: "Supposedly switching to Library before doing the DELETE avoids the problem."

Post 6: "this time ended on an image that was part of the rejected group. Did a Ctrl-Backspace to delete and now the previewed image froze - the image frozen is the rejected image that had been showing when I did the Ctrl-Backspace. If I go into any other module, I can select any image and view it. But going back into Develop ONLY displays that now-rejected frozen image."

Post 7: "Use the Library module to cull images and the Develop module for developing and adjusting images."

Post 8: "Please show me where in the documentation it states that images must be deleted only from the Library module."

Post 9: "X them then when you want to actually delete them just press the "g" key to take you back to the Library module before you do the actual deleting."

Post 10: "I have exactly the same issue with Lightroom 6.8: Re: Lightroom 6.8 Mac delete issue."

Post 14: "the only time the bug appears seems to be when I leave the preview image on one of the images I intend to delete. If I move to another image that does not have an X, LR continues to work fine and the preview doesn't freeze. I suspect LR gets confused when its current preview image no longer exists after the Ctr-Backspace and crashes the preview."

Post 15: "after x'ing several images to delete in the develop mode, and pressing Command/Delete, LRoom freezes."

Post 16: "try to delete in Develop (as I was able to do perfectly well with LR 5.7) and LR CC (downloaded 2 days ago from new) freezes. If I delete whilst in Library it seems ok.
Just tried hofendisasd solution and that too seems to work - switch to a non-marked for deletion image and then delete command."

Post 17: "I also x and then Ctrl-Del in the Develop module."

Post 18: "A rejected photo stays locked into the develop module and no way to remove or bring up the photo selected in the Library or thumbnail views."

Post 19: "I've found that if a photo is marked for rejection/deletion within the develop module, and you return to the Library module and Cmd/Del from within there, all seems to work fine"

Post 21: "I tried adjusting my workflow to not actually delete the rejects in my usual order - just left them to delete later - and sure enough - I've now changed folders and modules 3 times without having to restart - so I guess perhaps it IS tied to the delete process."

Post 22: "Only time it seems to be a problem is if I delete in Develop mode."

Hello,

I was also completely fed up with it and downgraded to 12.5
It works perfectly with the Palette gear.

I also discovered that when you adjust it via the sliders on the screen, it only confuses it with the sliders linked to the palette gear...
So for example, I have temperature and exposure on a dial, and I change the haze, for example, it is no problem...

a very strange thing, but for the time being the 13.0.1 will NOT be installed here anymore.

regards

I also have this issue with MacOS Sonoma 14.0 and Lightroom Classic 13.0.1 on a MBP 14" M1 Pro. It happens when using +/- keys and resolves itself when I go back to the previous photo and then advance again. It doesn't happen every single time, but it is very frustrating. I hope this gets resolved asap as it is a hindrance in my workflow.
