P: File renaming sequence applied incorrectly

At some point over the past few months, Lightroom updated the Filename options on export and completely broke how sequential filenaming worked. I’ve noticed each of the following behavior changes.

In 2025 and Prior:

  • When exporting a sufficient number of photos at once, Lr would automatically add leading zeros. (EXAMPLE: If exporting at least 10 photos, the first photos would sequence as 01, 02, 03, etc., if exporting at least 100, the first photos would sequence as 001, 002, 003, etc.)
  • When executing multiple exports at different times, Lr would recall the previously used filename AND remember what the last used sequence number was (EXAMPLE: After exporting 15 photos with the Custom Name - Sequence defined as “PhotoName” with a starting number of “1,” if another export was later begun, the options would be preloaded with “PhotoName” still in the Custom Name field and the starting number would update to “16.”

Now, when using Lightroom, both of these behaviors are completely broken.

  • No matter how many photos are exported, the first exported filenames in a sequence will not have leading zeros, creating significant issues with ordinal file management. (EXAMPLE: The first 11 suffixes of an export batch, no matter the size of the batch, will be -1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7, -8, -9, -10, -11. As a result, sorting files by name, which is forced in some softwares, results in an order of -1, -10, -11, -2, -3, -4, etc.)
  • The option fields in the Export panel are reset at every export. Whenever a new export is started, Lr does recall which type of filenaming scheme was used, but the fields are reset to “Untitled” for Custom Name and “1” for starting number, regardless of what was previously used. (Not only does this add the extra step of re-inputting the custom name, and any typos will destroy consistency, but it also requires the user to go back and manually recall / find what the next sequence number would be)

I can’t find any reason for why these behaviors would be intentionally changed, so I am certain this must be a bug. Sequential Filenaming used to be such a breeze in Lightroom that I never even thought of it because it worked so well, and now the whole workflow is completely ruined!

Since updating to Lightroom Classic 9.2, Lightroom no longer remembers the last used export sequence number once the export folder is emptied.

This creates a massive workflow problem for me as a professional photographer and filmmaker working with very large image archives and cloud-based delivery systems.

My workflow looks like this:

  • I export images into a temporary export folder
  • Due to very slow internet speeds at home, I upload projects to the cloud in multiple batches over time
  • After uploading, I move the already uploaded files out of the export folder into their final archive location
  • When the export folder becomes empty, Lightroom starts the filename sequence again at “1”

Example:

  • First export: Image-1.jpg to Image-300.jpg
  • I upload and move those files away
  • Next export starts AGAIN at Image-1.jpg

This results in:

  • constant duplicate filenames
  • files being overwritten or renamed by macOS/cloud systems
  • chaotic cloud galleries
  • impossible long-term archive management
  • broken search functionality because filenames are no longer unique

For high-volume professional productions this is honestly a terrible state.
I work with tens of thousands of files across multiple long-term infrastructure and media projects, and having Lightroom reset export numbering based only on whether the folder is empty is extremely unreliable.

Lightroom should either:

  1. remember the last used sequence globally,
  2. offer a persistent numbering option,
  3. or at least provide a warning that numbering will reset once the target folder is empty.

At the moment this behavior makes sequential export naming almost unusable in professional archive workflows.

Hi I am experiencing same but on Lightroom Classic (non-cloud) and LRC 15.2.1 with Mac Sequoia 15.7.3. Just an FYI.

This is also still happening for me and it’s even skipping numbers. In the attached photo you will see that numbers: 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, etc are completely skipped over when exporting using “Custom Name - Sequence”. I export hundred of photos a day that need to be labeled properly in order for our software to catalogue them properly. Going back and correcting missing numbers has been absolutely miserable.

*correction. The skipping numbers problem seems fixed after restarting. But the other problems still remain

Hi Rikk,

Yes, I can confirm the issue persists in the 9.3 release. The behaviors are all the same as I listed out, with one exception. In 9.3, The “Custom Name” field when using “Custom Name - Sequence” filenaming once again remembers the most recent name used. For multiple exports, the name is no longer reset between each batch to “Untitled.” The numbering, however, is still reset to a “Start Number” of “1” for each batch, and leading zeroes are still never used, regardless of the number of photos selected in the batch.

Having the same issue, which is adding more admin work after exporting by having to manually change the name of exported files so they display sequentially. Is there any way this can be reverted to how the export originally worked?

The latest Lightroom update has changed how the custom file names can be exported as a sequence, and I can’t find any way around it. It used to automatically change the number format based on how many photos you were exporting (eg less than 10 would be formatted -0, 10-99 photos would be -00, 100-999 would be -000 and so on), but now it just stays with the fewest number of characters. This means I can be exporting over 100 photos with a custom name, and when viewed in name order they won’t go from filename-1, filename-2, filename-3 etc, they’ll go filename-1, filename-10, filename-100, filename-2, filename-20, filename-200 etc etc. The old format would have kept them sequential, with it automatically setting the format so the exported photos would be set as filename-001, filename-002 and so on. It’s particularly disruptive when you’re exporting photos taken throughout an event, and two photos taken seconds apart and should be viewed as a sequence are all split up. Is there any way to set the format the numbering follows in a sequence, and if not could someone at Adobe make that a thing please?
