P: LrM Erratic custom sort order

Recent difficulties with custom sort order for collections in LR Mobile on my iPad Air. Sometimes, if I drag an image to the left border to move the image in front of an image that is currently at the left edge of the matrix, the sort order for the whole collection reverses top to bottom. It's as though the Sort by Capture Date reverse order arrow had been applied, but, of course, there is no reverse order arrow for Custom Order. Sometimes repeating the maneuver or tapping at the top border switches the order back. Sometimes, you have to manually drag the entire collection, one image at a time, back into the original order. Also, the sort function erratically fails to move the image into the correct spot. If I release a dragged image when the blue highlight is at the desired spot between two images, the dragged image will be placed one spot to the right instead. With the blue target line to the left border of the target image, LR deposits the moved image after that image instead of in front of it. These issues started with latest update. I think these are bugs that Adobe needs to address.

I am having this issue as well.  And I've moved photos around in Lightroom Classic, to no avail.  Strike that - some photos are subsequently shown in the correct Capture Date order after that using the public link, but many are still in an incorrect order - which is super frustrating.  Any new "workarounds" on this bug?

I do not understand why the custom sort option is such a mess! Why can't I set a custom sort order in LR Classic and have it retained in both LR for the iphone and ipad? Even if I manually set the custom order in the mobile app to mirror LR Classic the new custom order on the mobile device changes to mostly random order on the next sync. I've even had my custom order lost in LR Classic after a sync, but fortunately that is not common. It doesn't seem to make a difference if LR is open on my PC or not when the mobile sync happens.

This is an almost constant aggravation with any new synced collection. It does not seem to affect older collections that have not changed.

I just had this happen using LR Mobile 7.3.2 on iPad Pro running iPadOS 15.4.1 and LR Classic 11.2. Seems to be an interaction between items syncing from LR Classic trashing the custom sort order in LR Mobile. I haven't investigated in greater depth because the time to re-order a couple dozen images in LR Mobile is significant, but it only seems to happen if LR Classic is running at the same time. At no point did I have a custom sort order set in LR Classic; it was just making changes to images or changing star ratings (which were used as filter criteria on LR Mobile). When or after that happened, the custom sort order in LR Mobile would reverse itself, or a single move would scramble the images.

Surely by now Adobe realise that this problem is a software bug in Lightroom Classic. Why is it taking so long to recognise this and to apply a system upgrade to address the issue?

Rikk, I had a similar issue this past Monday when we had a power outage that lasted over 24 hrs. During the power outage I launched LR on my Samsung Android tablet and noticed one on my LR Classic synced collections had changed its sort order from Custom to Capture Date. When I changed back to Custom pictures started dropping out of the grid view until there was only one picture visible. I checked another album and the same thing happened. These are all LR Classic synced collections that have been downloaded to the tablet with proxy previews created. Once I got power back and reconnected via Wi-Fi I I was able to change the sort order again, Syncing restarted, and very quickly all of the pictures in the albums appeared. It may be a different problem, but this is the first time I’ve experienced it when using the tablet without an Internet connection.

I find the default sort in LR Mobile to Capture Date VERY annoying. It should be obvious that if a photographer in Classic has taken the trouble to re-sort a Collection to CUSTOM, then this is what is required also when syncing to LR Mobile. In other words, whatever sort selection has been chosen by the photographer in Classic should be reflected automatically when synced to LR Mobile. But particularly CUSTOM!

This is even more annoying when I re-sort on the MacOS desktop LRCC to CUSTOM and then find it is still defaulting to Capture Date on my iPad and iPhone. Is this so hard to fix?

LR Classic 8.2.1 (1206193) on desktop running Windows 7 64-bit
Order used in the corresponding collection on the desktop is Custom Order which produces the order on the iPad. Usual workflow is to take photos on DSLR camera (not phone or tablet), import raw files into LR Classic on desktop, create a collection on desktop, arrange sort order on desktop, and then sync collection to cloud, which makes them appear on iPad. I might later rearrange order or delete some photos either on desktop or on iPad. Video is example of one such attempt. Additions after initial sync would have to come from desktop, where raw images are stored. Have experienced odd behavior of sort order on iPad or iPhone only, never desktop. Currently iPhone behaving OK, but iPad reliably misbehaving. Don't know if it makes any difference that the collection shown in video is currently the target collection on the desktop.

Thanks for the video. A couple of questions from the engineering staff:

  1. Do you use any other LIghtroom Clients (Desktop/Web)?
  2. If so, what is the sort order set in that client for the album in the video?
