P: Mask sliders not automatically resetting

  • June 22, 2026

Since the recent update, I’m having a lot of issues with masks. When I create a new mask (example a linear gradient mask) some of the sliders have already been adjusted. I have the ‘Reset sliders automatically’ box checked. Additionally, sometimes I am adjusting the sliders for a mask and the change is not being applied to the image (like if I change the exposure slider the selected area does not get brighter/darker). Finally, if I right click on a mask » Delete » nothing happens and the mask isn’t deleted. Is this a known issue? Any tips on how to resolve this please?

I am using Lightroom version 9.4 and Windows 11.

Are we to assume this also covers the issue when no masks are involved. No one has explicitly confirmed that the specific issue I reported is related or covered by the same potential fixes.

    Hi @Generous_view0D45,

Thanks for reporting this. We know of a similar issue. Could you verify if it matches what you're experiencing:

To help us narrow down your specific case, a few questions:

    1. The most concentrated reports so far are from the Mac App Store build of Lightroom. If you're on that version, try installing the app via the Creative Cloud Desktop app and check whether the behavior continues.

    2. Are you using an external display when this happens? Some reports correlate the issue with multi-monitor setups. If so, does the problem occur only when Lightroom is on the built-in display?

    3. You mentioned this happens with Refine Saturation and Vignette. Does this also happen in the Masking panel when switching between masks on the same photo, or is it exclusively when switching between different photos in the Edit module?

    4. Does it happen with all file types (RAW, DNG, JPEG), or have you noticed it more with one?

In the meantime, please check if the following workaround works for you. After switching photos, briefly navigate to a different photo and then back, this forces the panel UI to refresh and display the correct slider positions.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

    Best,

I am not using the App Store version. I am not using an external display, nor do I have any connected. This issue only seems to happen when switching to an unedited photo, or at least a photo where the relevant settings have been untouched. I only work with raw files from my camera.

Thanks for those details, @Generous_view0D45. They're very helpful and align with what we're seeing in other reports. This confirms it's the same UI refresh issue where the panel doesn't properly redraw slider positions when moving from an edited photo to one at default values.

The slider UI fails to invalidate its cached draw state when the underlying edit values are at their default values. The actual image processing is correct; your edits are not being misapplied. This is purely a visual rendering issue in the panel.

After switching to a new photo, collapsing and re-expanding the affected panel (click the panel header twice) should force a redraw of the slider positions. This is faster than switching photos back and forth.

We have logged this already with the product team, and it remains under active investigation. I am consolidating your thread with the main thread on this issue to keep all reports in a single post.

Once the fix ships, we will update the post.

When switching to edit a new photo, these sliders (and probably others) remain graphically set to the last option they were set to, despite the values actually being set to the default for a new photo.

Tested on 9.4.1 with macOS Tahoe (M5 Max MacBook Pro)

I can confirm that I’m seeing the exact same issue on my system as well. My environment is:

    MacOS 26.5.2 / Lightroom 9.4.1 / (Macbook Pro M5 with external monitor)

The Masking panel behaves exactly as described: when switching between masks on the same photo, the UI keeps showing the slider values from the previously edited mask instead of updating to the correct settings of the newly selected one. The underlying mask data seems intact, and switching to another photo and back forces the panel to refresh properly.

So yes, same reproducible behaviour here.

    Hi @Maksim Leonov

Thank you for the detailed report and for outlining the behavior so clearly. We'd like to gather a bit more information to help us investigate:

    • Does this issue occur with every image, or only with specific photos?
    • Does it happen with all types of masks (Subject, Sky, Brush, Linear/Radial Gradient, etc.), or only certain mask types?
    • Is the issue limited to a particular file format (RAW, DNG, JPEG, HEIC, TIFF, etc.)?
    • Does the problem occur in a brand-new catalog with newly imported images, or only in an existing catalog?
    • If you create a new mask on the affected image, does the same behavior occur?
    • System info from Help Menu (Help> System Info> Copy-paste the details here)

If possible, please share a short screen recording demonstrating the issue. Seeing the Masking panel as you switch between masks on the same image would be especially helpful, as it will allow us to verify whether this is a UI refresh issue and attempt to reproduce it on our end.

We appreciate you taking the time to report this and look forward to your response.

Hello, Srishti Bali, thank you for your interest in my post.

    1. The problem occurs with all images. However, I only work with RAW files and DNG from DXO PureRAW6.

    2. I don't know for sure about all masks, but I'm pretty sure that values can be mixed between the Linear Gradient and the Subject mask. And also between Linear Gradients, which I use all the time. I really appreciate Lightroom for this feature, it's the only one that fully implements this functionality. So, I'm disappointed with this issue, it really hinders my work.

    3. The problem occurs with photos from any catalog, even from the Cloud.

    4. The problem arises precisely when creating a new mask. More precisely, the meaning of the new mask is shown in the previous one. And so on. They get mixed up. And this confuses me. In reality, they don't change. It's just the visual data that gets mixed up. If you jump from photo to photo and then back, the values will be displayed correctly. But in the process, jumping around the images after each mask is very inconvenient, you must admit.

    5. I'll be working tomorrow and try to record a screen shot if I can. But that's all the information for now. Let me know if you need more details.

6.The next post contains information about the system >

    Sincerely, Maksim

Hi everyone, I am experiencing a severe UI bug in the latest Lightroom update (v9.4) from the Mac App Store on macOS.

Environment: OS: macOS 26.5.1 App Version: Lightroom v9.4 (Mac App Store build).

Issue description: The Masking panel fails to update its state when switching between different masks on the same photo. Instead of showing the actual settings of the newly selected mask, the panel continues to display the slider values from the mask I was editing previously.

Example: 1. I select Mask 1 and set Exposure to +1.0. 2. I select Mask 2 and set Exposure to -0.5. 3. I switch back to Mask 1. The UI incorrectly shows Mask 1's Exposure as -0.5 (carrying over the values from Mask 2), even though the actual photo rendering might still look correct.

Workaround & Details: The data itself is not corrupted. If I switch to a different photo and then jump back to the original image, the UI finally refreshes and displays the correct, individual values for each mask.

A clean reinstall with complete preference and cache removal did not fix this. It seems to be a bug in how the Masking panel refreshes its UI state within the same image session in v9.4.

Anyone else seeing this on macOS? Hopefully, the team can acknowledge and patch this soon.

Hi Claire, thanks for your reply! Please find attached the requested info. You can see in the recording that when I create a new linear mask a lot of the sliders are already adjusted.

Thanks for sharing the updated, @laura_9321

Your machine has two GPUs: the power-saving Intel® UHD Graphics and the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti.

    Please try these two suggestions:
1 - Update the graphics drivers by only using Intel's & Nvidia's auto-detect programs, Windows Update service may not offer the latest drivers.

2 - After updating the GPU drivers, try the steps below and check the results. The GPU info & Logs location on Windows is %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw. A shortcut to get to this folder on Windows is:

    • Press the Windows + R
    • Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw
    • Rename the GPU & Logs folder in this directory by adding .old at the end. (GPU.old & Logs.old)
    • Launch Lightroom again.

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks!
