P: Once you enable sorting by time, the stacked photos cannot be unstacked.

With the April 2026 version of Lightroom (Assisted Culling Improvements), I found that once you enable stacking by time, the stacked photos cannot be unstacked. I never actually created any stacks; it created them automagically and now all my photos in stacks are hidden and cannot be opened, even though both Time and Visual Similarity are unchecked. This is using Mac version 9.3.

    Hi @jgreenst ,

Thank you for reporting this. I understand how frustrating it must be to have photos hidden in stacks that you can't undo. This is a known issue in Lightroom 9.3, where the Ungroup Stack option can become disabled after stacks are created, making it appear as though you can't unstack your photos. The team is aware, and a fix is being worked on. In the meantime, here's a workaround that should help you recover your photos:

    • Switch to Grid view (press G or click the Grid icon in the toolbar).
    • Click away from the stacked photos — select a different, non-stacked image first.
    • Click back on the stacked photo group (you should see a number badge on the thumbnail indicating a stack).
    • Right-click on the stack and the "Ungroup Stack" option should now be enabled.
    • Alternatively, try Photo > Stacking > Ungroup from the menu bar after re-selecting.

If stacks still won't expand or ungroup after trying this, could you share:

    • What view were you in (Grid, Square Grid, Detail) when you enabled the Time sorting?
    • Are the stacked photos showing a number badge on their thumbnails in Grid view?
    • Are you working in All Photos, or within a specific album?

This will help us narrow things down further. We appreciate your patience. A fix is planned for an upcoming release.
