P: Photoshop 25.9 and 25.10 (Beta) BOTH fail launch with error 0xc0000142

This all started when I attempted to do a normal update to 25.9 on my Windows 10 system yesterday (May 22).  After the update, 25.9 fails with the 0xc0000142 error.  In another thread here, it was recommended to install the latest beta (25.10) which is supposed to resolve this issue.  I have now twice installed 25.10 beta from the Adobe Create Cloud app and I continue to get the 0xc0000142 error (note that when attempting to launch from the CC app there is no error message, just nothing happens; when launching from the Windows shortcut the error occurs).  I'm aware that some people are having success with 25.10; I AM NOT.

Here is some info from my Windows 10 system:

The Windows Event Log reports the following:

Thank you,  Thank you, Thank you.  I would not be as "teccie" or as intelligent as most of you and this fix has restored my faith in adobe.

Please could us "oldies" be thought of when upgrades are released.  Please.

Thank you all again for your mavellous work.

This issue was fixed with the latest release.  IF YOU STILL see this issue, please start a new thread so the team can see what might be happening with your system.

Thank you all for your patience on this one, it is great to hear you are back up and running.

Thanks,

I updated today (June 3) to the latest 25.10 beta release from CCD and I'm happy to report that it launches successfully on my antiquated system.

I would like to extend my gratitude and thanks for your team's efforts in working this issue for us outliers.

Thanks again.

@Jacob Co.  As the original poster of this thread, I wanted to let you know that today (June 3) I have just updated to the latest 25.10 beta release (Adobe Photoshop Version: 25.10.0 20240602.m.2640 211b761 x64) from CCD and can report that it now launches successfully on my system.

Your team's efforts at working around the AVX/AVX2 dependency issue are greatly appreciated!  This will allow those of us with older (but still very viable and useful) CPUs to continue to use Photoshop and get full value from our subscriptions going forward.  As a long time user of computer systems and a software professional, I think we sometimes are forced to throw out perfectly good hardware unnecessarily when application developers (and OS providers as well) rush to constantly update and add "new" features, and I applaud Adobe's effort here to allow us to continue with Photoshop on our current systems, at least for a while longer.

I am hopeful it should be possible to move forward with Photoshop development and accommodate systems with and without AVX/AVX2 simultaneously; it is understood that systems without the extensions may run a bit slower on some functions but on those systems that DO have the extensions they would get the full benefits.  If this will not be possible in the future, I will hope that Adobe publish well in advance the dates by which we will need to update hardware (similar to how MS does it).

I will assume for now that this workaround will only exist in 25.10 and greater (and not ever in 25.9) so for now I will continue with 25.7 until 25.10 is fully released on CCD.

Thanks.

A che punto siamo per la risoluzione del problema relativo all'errore (0xc0000142) nelle versioni stabile 25.9 e versione beta 25.10? Ci date qualche chiarimento?

@FADAMIA

I've moved your post from Creative Cloud Desktop to the Photoshop Beta forum.

See this reply on the Primary thread:

"The problems with hardware that lacks AVX support is now a known issue in 25.9 and 25.10, so please use 25.7 on these old systems. Our team is working on updating the known issues documentation. The 25.9 beta had issues with pre-AVX2 machines that we urgently fixed, but non-AVX is still a trouble spot."

We've made some progress in non-AVX experimentation but still need more testing. Any changes would come to beta first.

One concern is that supporting <1% of very old machines could have some unknown negative performance impacts on the vast majority of users with newer hardware, for certain features. It's likely obvious that giving the best experience to the majority of users and taking full advantage of new hardware should be a priority.

Note that Ps system requirements are already listed as Windows 10 64-bit (version 21H2) or later, and MS's formal list of Windows 10 21H2 Supported Intel Processors is here. Related to our own research based on user reports, I'd recommend anyone with issues cross checking their CPUs against that list. If your CPU is not on there, it might be an indicator of potential out of bounds support even at this time. Still, we will continue to see what we can do for now.

@Jacob Co. Thank you for the status and overview. I have a better understanding of the challenges you and the rest of the team faced in finding solutions for the different platforms and OSs undeterred by the cacophony of intemperate voices out there. I look forward with eager anticipation to see if y'all can pull another rabbit out of the hat to help us outliers with antediluvian CPUs.

Thanks again,

Hey folks, thanks so much for all the info as it's been very helpful in diagnosing the issue.

The problems with hardware that lacks AVX support is now a known issue in 25.9 and 25.10, so please use 25.7 on these old systems. Our team is working on updating the known issues documentation. The 25.9 beta had issues with pre-AVX2 machines that we urgently fixed, but non-AVX is still a trouble spot.

Dropping support during a dot release was not intentional, and we are actively attempting to fix 3rd party Ps dependencies that have introduced this issue. We hope to know more next week. Many of our apps and dependencies have already dropped support for anything without AVX2. However, the Photoshop team is trying hard at this time to give our users more time to update their hardware. We are one of the few that not only supports AVX, but non-AVX, to any degree.

If we can fix the dependencies issue, we will release the fix in a beta release and then production, after testing. If we cannot fix it due to security and other issues, then 25.7 would be the version to use. Whatever the case, it's good to be aware that losing support for non-AVX (and possibly even non-AVX2 machines) is inevetible. It's not possible to align all dependencies to support old hardware indefinitely, while also being confident that the result will be a stable product.

Thanks for the patience. We'll continue to explore a possible fix and provide an update as soon as possible.

Regards,

Jacob - Photoshop Engineering Manager

@CShubertI'm wondering if your team is even looking at our sysinfo data we've provided here...your answer is in that data.

For my Windows 10 system, here is my CPU/Architecture sysinfo:

System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:12, Stepping:2 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, HyperThreading

So per the above, my CPU (Intel Xeon X5672) does NOT include the AVX or AVX2 instructions.

My high-end HP Z800 system has been happily running Photoshop and Lightroom (and lots of other graphics-oriented software) forever without any issues relating to the AVX or AVX2 instructions.  In my view, it is a HUGE mistake for Adobe if you are now releasing a "dot" release of Photoshop on a supported Microsoft OS (Windows 10) that is suddently going to require AVX, without ANY warning to users.  AVX is just an extension that speeds up certain repeated vector-related tasks at the CPU level; it should NOT be an application requirement and the Photoshop code should allow for cases where AVX is not available.

If you really want to require users to have CPUs that include AVX instructions, you need to advise us a YEAR IN ADVANCE in order to plan budgets etc. for acquiring new systems or otherwise making decisions on future software usage.  It really isn't acceptable to suddenly require this on a dot release.

@CShubert My Intel CPU is of 2009 vintage, before AVX support came into play.
