First TAB key is ignored or delayed in Save As dialog after drag-and-drop opening PSD

Environment

  • Windows 10 Pro 22H2 x64

  • Directory Opus 13.23 x64

  • Adobe Photoshop 2025 (26.11.5)

  • Adobe Photoshop 2026 (also tested)

  • Directory Opus is configured as my primary file manager.

Description

I'm not sure whether this is caused by Photoshop or by the interaction between Photoshop and Directory Opus, but the issue is consistently reproducible on my system only when opening PSD files by dragging them from Directory Opus.

The issue never occurs when using Windows Explorer with the exact same PSD file.

After dragging a PSD from Directory Opus into Photoshop, I press Ctrl+Shift+S and choose JPEG.

When the Windows Save dialog appears, pressing TAB immediately does not move the keyboard focus to the File type field.

Instead:

  • Nothing happens for about 1–2 seconds, or

  • I need to press TAB twice before the focus moves.

Once the initial delay has passed, TAB works normally.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Drag a PSD file from Directory Opus into Photoshop.

  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S.

  3. Select JPEG.

  4. When the Windows Save dialog appears, press TAB immediately.

Expected result

TAB should immediately move the keyboard focus from the filename field to the file type field.

Actual result

The first TAB key press is delayed by approximately 1–2 seconds.

Sometimes pressing TAB twice is required before the focus changes.

Additional observations

If I save the document once, every subsequent Save As operation for that same document works correctly, even after closing and reopening that PSD.

However, if I rename the parent folder containing the PSD, the issue appears again the next time the PSD is opened from Directory Opus.

Comparison

Method Result
Drag PSD from Windows Explorer Works correctly
Drag PSD from Directory Opus Delayed TAB response
Photoshop → File → Open Works correctly

The issue only occurs when the PSD is dragged from Directory Opus.

What I tested

  • Updated Directory Opus to version 13.23

  • Tested Photoshop 2025 and Photoshop 2026

  • Same result in all cases

Possible cause (speculation)

Since the problem only occurs when the PSD originates from Directory Opus, it seems Photoshop handles files received through Directory Opus differently than files received from Windows Explorer.

Perhaps the drag-and-drop data or shell object provided by Directory Opus causes Photoshop's Save As dialog to initialize differently.

This is only a hypothesis, but the behavior is consistently reproducible on my system.

Request

Could someone from the Photoshop team let me know whether additional logging or diagnostic information would help investigate this issue?

I'd be happy to perform further testing if needed.
