Further glitches when working in RGB documents (8 bit) under layers in "Colour" mode, etc.
Issue:
Further glitches when working in RGB documents (8 bit) under layers in "Colour" mode, etc.
Photoshop version:
Photoshop 2023 (24.XX) to Photoshop 2024 (25.11)
OS:
3. Windows 11 Pro (23H2, latest version) - current
2. Mac OS Sonoma 14.5
1. Mac Os Big Sur 11.7
Hardware:*
3. PC - current
*(For exact specifications see: Notes)
2. iMac
1. Macbook Pro
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a document in RGB mode (e.g. A4, 300 DPI)
2. Create a layer in colour mode -Color- or e.g. -Multiply-
3. create several other layers underneath. Preferably with various contents. E.g. texts, colour gradients, objects, smart objects, adjustment layers etc. - also groups... (See example file)
4. under the layer in mode -Colour- on one of the other layers:
Draw + move a gradient
Or: work with the brush
Or: edit + move a text layer
Or: perform various other actions
→ Note: sometimes the order in which the different layers are placed under the upper layer in -Color- mode (e.g. the text layers above the smart object - or vice versa) plays a role
Expected result:
Trouble-free working!
Actual result:
Glitches occur during the actions described above (see videos).
The glitches only disappear again when the upper layer is hidden and shown again in -Colour- mode.
Provisional work-around:
- Convert document to 16 bit mode
- Or: Convert document to CMYK mode
- Deactivate graphics type support
→ All work-arounds have disadvantages and affect the design options and the final result.
Notes:
The problem with these glitches has been affecting work since Photoshop 24.XX (Mac OS).
Currently with Photoshop 25.11 (PC Windows 11 Pro)
First on my Macbook Pro:
- Intel Quad Core i7, 2.5 Ghz, RAM: 16 GB DDR3
- Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GT 750M
- Mac OS Big Sur 11.7
Then on my iMac:
- Intel Core i9 3.6 Ghz 64 GB, RAM: DDR4 RAM
- Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 580X 8GB VRAM
- Mac OS 14.5 Sonoma
Currently on my PC:
- AMD Rysen 9 79503D 16Core 4.20GHz, RAM: 64 GB DDR5
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB VRAM
- Windows 11 Pro, 23H2, current Nvidia Studio driver 560.81 (08/24)
Previous tests and procedure to fix the problem:
Current:
- Windows 11 was completely reinstalled. Including bios, chip driver, graphics driver - everything was updated. After reinstallation, Photoshop alone was installed. The glitches were back immediately.
Before that, individual tests, measures:
- All fonts were uninstalled, with a new font manager only a few fonts were loaded.
- All preferences were deleted
- Photoshop was uninstalled and reinstalled
- Various possible default settings for graphics card support were tested
- Graphics card support was completely deactivated in the preferences
Only the last point listed (disable graphics card support completely) resulted in no more glitches appearing
But - this is not really surprising, as it is obviously a display problem and a problem with the graphics card.
Since the same problem now occurs over several generations of Photoshop, as well as on different operating systems (Mac OS + Windows), with different graphics cards (Nvidia + AMD / Mac + Nvidia / PC) and always different, latest drivers, it can probably be assumed that there is a fundamental problem with layer mode processing while Photoshop is working with the graphics card. I can rule out faulty graphics cards or setting errors.
As some users in the forum also had the problem, other users could not reproduce the problem on their machines with a test file (see links to posts below), the problem only seems to occur with certain system, hardware, graphics card combinations.
I would be more than happy for you to investigate and fixing the problem!
Working with layers in different modes is one of the special and most important design options in Photoshop (certainly not only for me).
Examples:
Glitches when moving, creating gradients, creating text, painting:
Glitches - through different arrangement of the layers:
