Generative Expand/Fill causes (high-end) PC to freeze in hard power off

Recently upgraded my PC to perform optimally for graphic design work and 3D.

While using Photoshop the last few weeks I'm facing  the following issue:

It first happened as I was trying to transform an image from vertical to horizontal with Generative Expand turned on. Second time happened as I was simply brushing with symmetry turned on.

Third and forth time, which I was crash testing happened as I was using Generative AI features.

The displays instantly shut off, PC appears to be on, but does not respond even to hard power off(continuous button press). To fix this and actually reboot the computer I have to manually cut the power supply off and on again, then the PC responds to manual power off (button press). Then I turn it on again manually.

I have tried sfc scans, uninstall Adobe CC and reinstall everything manually, checked for faulty RAM or PSU.

@D Fosse Thank you for the suggestion.

The problem persists even when RAM is at nominal speed. Also this rating is approved by manufacturer for optimal performance. I wish that was the issue here!

@Sameer K I have a very capable Be Quiet Straight Power 12 1000W PSU and have calculated the maximum wattage amount required and it does not push the limit or come near threshold at any time. Even during intensive gaming and other tasks under load.

I've updated the Photoshop version to latest. Will boot into safe mode and try sending another error report.

I also don't think it has anything to do with the displays as I've worked this way for quite a while in the past, without any issues. Despite that, I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

Below I've attached the DxDiag info.

If I may... @diosimos , have you tried to dial down RAM to the nominal speed? Overclocking RAM is never a good idea, and it serves no sensible purpose.

Also, the crash report and the system info suggest you're working on Photoshop 2021 (v22.2.0). Please share the info while using Photoshop 26.0 or Photoshop (beta) 26.1.

Thanks!

@Sameer K

Updates:
Kept using Web version, tried saving a photo again, successfuly this time- but took awfully long to save. Don't know if this useful as information but it's part of the troubleshooting experience I guess, so might as well.

Before going into Safe Mode, I tried an alternative sollution from another forum from 2022. I disabled GPU Processing, restarted Photoshop and tried Liquify again. Hard crash. Manual restart. Back to more adjustments.

I re-enabled the setting and then tried setting affinity in Task Manager > Details to 0-13 processors out of my available 31. Tried that too. Hard crash, it didn't change anything. Reverted the setting back to normal.

I then went into Safe Mode. I clicked on Photoshop, which instantly generated a crash report, without hard shut down on the entire computer this time.

Below you can see the details. That's as far as my knowledge goes.

Hey Diosimos! Thanks for sharing the details. The crash event log points to the Kernel power failure. I had a hiccup with a similar issue on my machine, which used to have hard crashes like yours when I played CS2. (I had to go from a 600W to a 1000W PSU).

Returning to the issue, you have four displays. Try unplugging additional displays and keep only one active at a time. Also, share the DxDiag info.

When you see the Crash report again in safe mode, add your email to the crash report dialogue and submit it

Thanks!

@Sameer K

Been using Web version for the past hour or so, and I've kept pushing it really hard. No issues there. AI features and everything. Didn't crash.

One thing that's happening though is that when trying to export a photo, it gets stuck midway through and never finishes processing.

Will launch Desktop App in Safe Mode and check back in.

Note that so far I've:
Rolled back updates, reinstalled them, tried disabling AI(which I thought initially was causing the problem, but I had the issue occur when transforming a textbox, brushing and liquifying as well, so that didn't fix anything) uninstalled Photoshop, uninstalled Adobe CC, reinstalled it, fresh install of Windows (11- this started happening when I updated to Windows 11), fresh update of BIOS, cleaned my RAM sticks, changed RAM sockets from A2-B2 config to A1-B1 and back, changed my PSU cable back to it's factory cable, checked my GPU for sag, checked my PCIe cable, did sfc scans, everything under the sun in terms of seeking alternatives that don't require hard technical skills and knowledge.

Hey @Sameer K , thank you for taking the time to investigate the issue.

To my knowledge, I'm only overclocking my RAM at 3600Mhz, as advised by a more tech savvy friend of mine. No GPU and CPU overclocking.

I'll be experimenting and pushing some things on the Web version, and let you know how that goes.

EVENT VIEWER:
The last critical instance of this crash was about an hour ago. I simply pressed Ctrl Shift X to go into Liquify, having opened a photo less than a minute, and having Lightroom open in the background. Screens went black, and computer was flashed without letting me power it down. The usual.

This is the error details I got from the administrative events under Critical:

From the event viewer, at the most recent instance I find nothing related to Photoshop, and all the other events near the time of the crash are incomprehensible jargon to me. Drivers, warnings and other things failing to load, things of that sort.

Thank you for responding!

Been waiting for days for even an idea from someone in the community, and just had this issue again with a rolled back version of Photoshop (2021) WITHOUT Generative AI. This time I was simply transforming a text box and my monitors just shut down, and my PC remained flashed without allowing me to shut it down. Since the last time, I've basically done all compatibility checks and tried other ways to fix this, yet nothing has worked and I'm still experiencing the issue. I stress tested my PC's GPU, CPU and RAM at 100% by running some software, and it never exhibited this behavior. One thing I noticed when opening up the case to check inside is that my EZ Debug LED CPU light has turned Red. Other than that I have no clue, and that's as far as my knowledge goes. As you mentioned, I don't get the chance to send a bug report or anything. If you check out the YT video I attached above you'll understand what it looks like. I then have to manually cut PC from power, give it a few moments and then turn on the power from the back again. It then boots up normally and everything looks normal.

Appreciate any and all insight into this matter.

Photoshop is a key software I use in my workflow so this has been very disruptive over the past month. Thanks!

Hey, @diosimos. Thanks for sharing all the details you have. Before Photoshop crashes, please share the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

Apart from this, a hard system crash is highly unlikely to be related with Photoshop. The details you've in the initial WRER log and in the follow-up also add to what I am speculating.

Check the Event viewer > Windows Logs > Application Logs at the crash even to find any faulting module that relates to Photoshop.

Are there any overclocking of the CPU, GPU or RAM in place? Try booting the device in safe mode and check if Photoshop behaves as expected.

A totally different test you can do is to use Photoshop Web (https://adobe.ly/3NYNShc).

Thanks!

Hi diosimos,

Thanks for sharing all the details and the video—I appreciate it. I passed this along to the team for further assistance. It doesn’t look like you had the option to submit a crash report, but just wanted to check. If you did, could you PM me the email address you used? Thanks!
