P: Can't access some network files on Apple Silicon M1 Mac "because the file is locked"

We have 15 Mac computers that are all connected to a NAS via SMB. Four of these are the new Apple Silicone computers which are great except that we're having an issue that is isolated to these new computers and Photoshop. An error prevents us from opening some PSD files on the NAS: "Could not open "file name" because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file."

We can access these same files from the Intel Macs without any problem (including using the same network credentials). I've verified it is a problem that is limited to the Apple Silicone computers and only when accessing some files. There doesn't seem to be any ryme or reason as to why this is happening.

Most of these computers are running MacOS version 12.3 or 12.3.1. I've verified that all the available permissions are granted in the Privacy preferences pane. We've been trying everything to find a solution for this but haven't any success so far. Is anyone else having this issue?

I contacted Apple support today. Just got the "did you try to turn it off an on" type of support.

In a few days I'm allowed to talk to somebody that actually knows what SMB is. Reporting back when I know more.

We can also observe the behavior described by @jonalange.de. If a file is selected in the finder, it cannot be opened via drag and drop. As soon as the file is no longer selected, everything works fine.

One thing I noticed today, would be great if somebody could confirm it.
My error was a bit longer and said that the file is either locked, I don't have permission or that another app is using it right now.
All of them wasn't the case. I noticed that my finder shows a preview of the file and that maybe this is counted as another app using the file (which is stupid, and never happened before apple silicon). I unselected the file to have no preview, dragged and dropped the file in PS and it actually opened.

It's annyoing as hell, but at least I can open stuff.
Can somebody confirm this, or is it another issue?

Kind of old thread, but I have the same problem.
@Daniel_ADB Is this the case if I can't connect, or will this actually fix this problem? I had no issue connecting via SMB with the normal method asking me for username and password. Besides PS I don't have problems with SMB

Same issue here:

App: Adobe Photoshop 23.5.1
OS: macOS 12.6 Monterey

Hardware: MacBook M1 Pro

Network: QNAP NAS using SMB

Issue: Photoshop randomlly can't open files it has opened just seconds before hand.

Error: Could not open “file_name.psd” because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file. If the problem persists, save the document to a different file or duplicate it in the Finder.

Adobe Official Response: Adobe Technical Support only supports using Photoshop and Adobe Bridge on a local hard disk. It's difficult to re-create or accurately identify network- and peripheral-configuration problems.

Recomended fix: Give Adobe Photoshop "Full Disk Access" via System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Full Disk Access. This does not resolve the issue.

Other Adobe applications, such as Premiere Pro, Bridge and Indesign have asked for access permission when oppening files. Under Privacy > Files and Folders we can see that:

Adobe Bridge 2022.app has access to:

  • Removable Volumes
  • Network Volumes
  • Downloads Folder
  • Documents Folder
  • Desktop Folder

Adobe Premiere Pro 2022.app has access to:

  • Network Volumes
  • Downloads Folder
  • Documents Folder
  • Desktop Folder

Adobe InDesign 2022.app has access to:

  • Network Volumes
  • Documents Folder

If we remove all Photoshop access and restart the M1 and try to open a file we will be prompteted to grant access. But even after giving access permission Photoshop only ever has "Documents Folder" and never "Network Volumes"

Photoshop unlike other applications never asks for permission to "Network Volumes". This is the issue and is entirely fixable by Adobe Photoshop (and Illustrator) if other Adobe departments have already resolved the issue.

Note that the same issue happens with Adobe Illustrator.

App: Adobe Illustrator 26.5
OS: macOS 12.6 Monterey

Hardware: MacBook M1 Pro

Network: QNAP NAS using SMB

Issue: Illustrator randomlly can't open files it has opened just seconds before hand.

Error: Can't open the illustration. The file is locked or in use. ID: -5

I have the same issue but found a workaround. It's additional work but it's the only way that I've found to be consistently successful in opening network files for my workflow.

Try copying the file to your local drive, then open it from there. You may get an error popup after it copies stating "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items.". Click "OK" and try opening it. So far for me, I've been able to open them regardless of the error message. Then when I'm done with the file, I save over it on the server and delete it from my local drive.

I work with GB sized psb files daily and this process slows my workflow down but I'm at least able to continue working. I hope it gets resolved soon.

Mac Studio (2022), Apple M1 Ultra Chip, Monterey v12.4 – Photoshop v23.4.1

Same here, started after switching to a new Mac (M1 Max) from Intel.

Before no problems, after it al started.... real bad experience.

We have the same problem with our M1 Macs – thanks for reporting it and for that dirty workaround!
I'll keep you posted if it is of any help!

Go check on Spiceworks, you'll find that SMB issues are common and its not just M1 Macs by a long shot.

As I said in my previous post, we've experienced the common SMB issues on all our machines, but the specific issue described in my original post is confined to the new Macs. Believe me when I say I've spent hours on the Spiceworks website researching the SMB issues related to Macs.
