P: Copy/Paste for layer names suddenly stops working - Windows

Hello,

after the update from v26.8.1 to v26.9, the following bug occurs:

My workflow involves precise layer naming. I often have to re-use the same part of a layer name convention, so for sake of speed, instead of writing the same name convention on a layer hundreds of times, I use to copy-paste the layer name from one layer to another.

To do that I use the shortcut ctrl+C and ctrl+V.

Unfortunately after the latest update, the copy paste function for layer NAMES stoped working and no name is copied/pasted. The layer itself ist copied instead.

Neither restarting PS does help, nor re-installing it.

Hope this can be solved quickly.

Thank you in advance for your concern.

I can confirm that this issue seems to be fixed in the latest v26.10 update.

In earlier versions of Photoshop, it was possible to copy and paste a layer name directly in the Layers panel using Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V. This was a very efficient way to reuse or transfer names between layers, especially when working on projects with a large number of layers.

In recent versions, however, the same shortcut only duplicates the layer instead of copying the layer name. This change has reduced usability and negatively impacted workflow speed, as it now requires extra steps (manually renaming, double-clicking, and pasting).

This feels like a regression of functionality rather than an improvement. Bringing back the ability to copy and paste layer names directly in the Layers panel would restore a faster and more intuitive workflow for users who manage complex projects with many layers.

At the very least, it would be extremely helpful if Photoshop included a preference option that allows users to choose the desired behavior (copy/paste layer names vs. duplicate layers). This flexibility would accommodate different workflows and ensure both options are available depending on user needs.

Before this last update in Photoshop, I could double-click a layer name to highlight its text, press Ctrl+C to copy it, then go to another layer, highlight its name, and press Ctrl+V to paste the copied text.

Now in Photoshop 2025, this doesn’t work at all:

  • Ctrl+C doesn’t copy the name.

  • Ctrl+V pastes the whole layer instead of the text.

The only way now is to manually right-click, choose “Copy,” then right-click again and choose “Paste,” which is slower and breaks the normal quick workflow. This worked in older versions and was especially useful when working on bigger files with lots of similar layers. Please bring it back.

@itsdimachka In Photoshop 2025, this functionality has been altered:

  • Ctrl C on a highlighted layer name will not copy the name text. Instead, it copies the entire layer and its contents.

  • Ctrl V will paste the entire copied layer, rather than just the text of the name.

As you noted, the only way to copy and paste a layer name now is to use the slower right-click menu. This change has indeed broken a popular workflow for many users, and there is a lot of user feedback requesting the old functionality be restored.

Photoshop 26.9.0 release on PC

When highlighting the text of a layer within the layers window and hitting control-c, the text will not go to the clipboard (yes, clipboard export is on). It will however, go to the clipboard if hitting shift-control-c (copy merged). It will also work if using right-click>copy.

Contrl-P also seems hit or miss. Sometimes it will paste text back into text that is highlighted within the layers window, but sometimes it will paste a whole layer. Seems to happen more if the layer with the text highlighted has a mask on it, but there seems to be no main rhyme or reason.

@johnb63770031 it's a known issue in version 26.9, a workaround is to hide the contextual task bar

FYI: I just did the latest update of Photoshop (Beta) to v26.10 and the issue seems resolved in the Beta-Version.
