P: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

thanks for your help and support!
m.

Turning snap on or off does not seem to make a difference. I reckon the idea is good but it is not what is causing the slowdown at my system.

I'm still trying to figure out the cause of that initial pause. But please see my message above about the Snap option.

i just made a test with Ray's test file. when i try to move any of the groups CS6 gets completely unusable for few seconds. i was just able to move one group with tools/panels turned off, but also without any refresh and very slow and jagged.

As an experiment: go to the view menu, and turn off the Snap item (command-shift-; ). It looks like the complexity of the layers is making "snap to layer bounds" take too long to check against all layer bounds.

With layer thumbnails disabled in CS6, the performance is a little worse for that document than in CS5: 3 FPS versus 5 FPS. I'll have to continue investigating to see why we're spending more time compositing in CS6 than in CS5. Looks like it has (at least partially) something to do with the layer styles, but that isn't the whole problem.

If setting the GPU usage to basic solved the problem, then the problem is in the shader handling of your GPU or driver (basic disables the more complex shaders).

I've noticed all of the same problems as those above. Turning off thumbnails did not solve the problem. Setting GPU to "Basic" and cache levels to 2, however, DID solve my particular problem. Things have now sped back up to CS5 levels. Seems CS6 is using the GPU in new/different ways and that the default install settings may not be optional for some users. Differences in GPUs, particularly those in Windows PCs like mine with greater variety of hardware and drivers, seems to me like the mostly likely cause of the problem. This might also account for discrepancies between users.

Hue/Sat slider changes are instantaneous - regardless of layer thumbnails.
Curves changes are about 20 FPS. I'm curious why that is slow, but suspect it has to do with the curves mouse tracking.

Still, something is very wrong if you're getting a progress bar when working with that document.

8 cores, 16 logical processors (hyperthreaded). Most people see 16 processors in the system stats and assume that's the actual core count, so it's usually specified as 8/16.
Mine was just before the 5870 was introduced (with the 12/24 CPUs), so I have the Radeon 4870.

And I almost always use server motherboards for my PCs. (it's that or buy a second MacPro for Windows)

I just downloaded your file and tried the things you are experiencing problems with. I don't have them either. It is a large file. Moving the white dots is not going very fluidly (kind of with little hickups). Altering the saturation of the curves layers updates pretty instantaneously on my machine.

However... my machine is pretty brutal (16-core 2,93GHz with 48GB or ram, OS disk is a OZC4 256Gb disk and my work disk is a 6 disk RAID5 built of OZC3 SSD's). The only thing that I could upgrade is the graphics adapter (from the 5770 to the 5870).

I have pasted a link to the file that is causing me problems below but here it is again; http://wtrns.fr/a11OwVlSE27cSI

Nice piece of graphics BTW 🙂
