P: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

    Vector shapes + effects it is!

    I have done some more testing with the same website PSD of 1200x1600 px with many folders and layers, comparing PS CS5.1 to PS CS6.

    I selected a particular folder consisting of folders, within those folders vector shapes + effects and type. For example a header with a logo and 5 buttons, each button is a folder with vector shapes + effects (outer glow, gradient, stroke).

    In CS 5.1 using the move tool dragging the folder around is fast (although not lightning fast). In CS 6 it is a lot slower, and in the case of folders with more elements it was almost impossible to move it in real time (let's say 2 fps compared to 15 fps). Nudging with shift was also slow. When converted the whole folder into a smart object, moving it was blazing fast of course. (logical: Now PS only needs to calculate the x y of 1 object)

    So my conclusion is that PS CS6 has trouble calculating (looping through all the vector shapes with effects in them) all at once when moving it. Note that in previous versions this problem already existed, although not as worse as in CS6 (on my system). I did some Flash programming in the past, that's why I used the term 'looping'. If somehow the code can be optimized so it will loop through all the folders/layers/shapes more efficiently, it would solve the problem... But who am I to say this right. :)

    The only solution I can think of for now is: Go back to PS CS5.1 and/or buy a super fast Mac Pro with 16 core and 32 gb of ram... as you can understand the latter will not be an option for many people because of the cost.

    In my opinion I think the code really needs to be improved.

    I saw I had a plugin installed (GuideGuide). I removed it.

    I did some more testing with PS CS6 and today it is a lot better, usable but the UX is quite 'not nice' due to the decreased performance (if you are like me and you create UI designs for a living). Same 1200x1600 file with a lot of vector shapes, text and folders. Panning, zooming with OpenGL a lot faster. Moving individual elements was fast, as expected. But moving a group of objects. For example a typical website header (folder) with logo (smart object), 5 buttons (folders with vector shapes and type). Many of these layers had styles applied to it (gradient, stroke, outer glow). I suspect PS has trouble calculating all the styles.

    p.s. Regarding performance I'm not talking about the time it needs to calculate a complex gaussian blur, but more like operating the UI. Opening, closing folders. Moving/nudging folders with a lot of layers (this has always been a slight problem, even with older versions).

    I don't have any plugins installed, it is a clean install. Removed all old preferences before installing. I don't think it has anything to do with external apps, if it does, than it sucks. I just have regular apps installed most Mac users do. Before CS6 everything worked fine.

    I also had the feeling it has something to do with the GFX card, but I don't think that is the only problem. Perhaps the build got a lot more heavy due to all the things added and now you need a faster computer in order to run it.
    If it helps it is a ATI Radeon HD 5750. I have the latest Mac OS update installed.

    Things like collapsing/opening folders in the layers palette with a lot of layers is also very sluggish. Opening PSD's is also a lot slower in CS6 compared to CS5.

    Could a lot of vector shapes be causing the slowdown? I'm a UI designer and I use a lot of vector shapes (some with effects). About 100 to 200 of them in 1 PSD. Do you guys do testing on things like website or UI designs (with a lot of vector shapes) or do you only test it on photography?
    In CS5 I already had problems with folders with a lot of vectors shapes + effects on it. Nudging or moving the folder would cause lag, but I could live with that, but not saying it is nice.

    I'm going to test it on a newer Mac I have.
    p.s. I don't think a late 2010 iMac is that old.

    Thanks for the suggestion but I have my own opinion on post XP windowses. I guess you can't tell or indicate about those XP flaws?
    Still slowdowns on CPU mode stand true as I mentioned above. That's something to look at, but don't tell to me, I think I made the definitive decision to stay on CS3.

    We found lots of things, and disabled all GPU usage for XP.
    And you used a "use at your own risk" registry entry that was intended for GPU vendors, not end users.
    Get Win7, you'll be a whole lot happier.

    Ah ok, so that's the reason I had to input the AllowOldGPU in the registry in order to make it work. Could you give me some insight on what things you detected that don't work on the driver (last version I suppose) and XP? I like tuning my OS and am interested.

    We'll have to do some more testing, but it really does sound like the HD3000 just isn't up to the task (partly because CS6 uses the GPU for more than CS5 did).

    Hm, to me that sounds like a massive cop out; It pans smoothly on PS cs5.

    Yeah, sounds like the HD3000 may be a bit underpowered to run smoothly.
