P: CS6 Slow compared to CS5.1 with large files

PS CS6 has a lot of enhancements and great features. it launches very fast, and the control is very responsive and smooth.

although i am experiencing some speed issues with very large files. compared to CS5.1, where i don't have any of these issues.

the files are PSBs, 9000x8000px, 80+layers, RGB, 8bit

i have the same performance settings for both, cs6 and cs5
i am working on MAC PRO, 16GB ram, SSD scratch, 2TB raid, Radeon HD 5770, Snow Leopard.

the main issues i have are:

- no refresh when i move the curve on adjustment layer. the refresh comes after i let go.
- jagged pan
- extremely slow moving of layers and layer groups, even if they are with smaller dimensions (800x400pix)

again, working with files with less layers or smaller dimensions is very fast.

thanks for your help and support!
m.

I tried both ways: 1. to set my SSD as the scratch disk and 2. to set my normal hard drive as the scratch disk. There was no noticeable difference in performance in either case.

It's only a noticeable problem on documents with dozens of layers, when you try to move many layers at a time. But yes, I wish it had been caught sooner...

i'm sorry chris, but millions of other users maybe use PS with only few layers and don't see the issue.

on the other hand many professionals working with huge files every day don't switch so quickly. they would wait to see if there are any issues with the new software. so probably they gonna have these issues too and we gonna hear from them later this year.

the systems of the other users here, having the same problem are very different, from diferent generations, and all have the same problem. so there should be something. maybe the problem is bigger than only the layer icons, and maybe when you find the solution the other slowness problems are fixed too.

I am surprised that the layer thumbnail slowdown didn't raise a red flag before the final release.

That's useful info, just a thought, is your scratch disk using the SSD as well?

David, that's really interesting that an Air outperforms a Mac Pro on CS6.

I wouldn't say it has to do with non-SSDs underperforming, though. I am on a MacBook Pro with an aftermarket SSD that generally screams in every other area of performance, and I'm experiencing this slow-down issue.

We have no idea what is different about your systems compared to millions of other users not seeing a slowdown.

We need you to help tell us what is different about your system that might cause a slowdown: third party plugins, external software, configuration, bad drivers, etc.

My Mac Book is 2 weeks old and has not been customized much at all. The Photoshop CS6 install is also totally standard from the download link - no customizations or changes. With smaller files like website designs with a few dozen layers, it's fast and responsive. With dozens or hundreds of layers and larger files it's much slower than CS4 and 5 to do pretty much anything.

As the problem only exists CS6 can you give us any insight at all into what could be causing it?

Do we vote at the top by agreeing that we have this problem or is there a specific place on the Adobe site we should be voting? I would very much like to see it fixed as would all of us in this thread. Thanks!
