P: Doesn't constrain proportions when resizing from side handle while holding Shift key

When using Free Transform, holding down Shift while dragging a corner rightly constrains the proportions of the shape while resizing. However, holding down Shift while dragging a side handle does nothing. It should continue to constrain the proportions as it does in Illustrator.

This is a great new change. It drove. me nuts until I found out why shift didn't lock down transform. It's one more thing you don't have to do. I like it now that I know why.

It's really infuriating for them to make this change after nearly THIRTY YEARS of it working the other way!  Make this a setting in the preferences if you want to give people the option, but don't go messing with my muscle memory!

Agreed, it's truly an embarrassing balls-up. For the moment, you can make a text file which reverts things, see the first post here for a how to:

Who knows what the future holds. It's frankly unbelievable these inconstancies made it into a release, and that Adobe defends them.

This is so stupid. Not only is it inconsistent with every other Adobe products... But when you go to transform a shape like an Ellipse from the shapes tool you have to start using the shift key again to keep it scaling to size. Doesn't even make sense! Why it would be one thing when transforming images and another for the circles and shapes... I can never remember and get it right, when I'm working on one project

Holy sh*t. I never would have thought to not hold shift. *facepalm*

If you're gonna do away with a feature as old as most of your users then you need to have a hint pop up in the user interface! wft!

The inconsistency of changing this in one context, of one tool, in one app, is still truly baffling to me sorry. It can only create confusion; the enemy of UI/UX for users of all levels/backgrounds.

Removing confusion and clarifying stuff is fundamentally what design is all about. If it needs changing, then it needs changing in every context, of every tool, in every app.

Yes, thanks.
Agree with others that it's truly poor form to change a behavior that was long-standing and remains a standard with other apps. I wonder if it's knowing arrogance, lack of information of something else.

Many thanks! It was really doing my head in. Fixed now!

Hi Heather, you can reverse it by adding a text file as described in the second post (the official response from Jeffrey Tranberry) here:  https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/constrained-resize-ps-cc-20

And agreed, this change is inconsistent within CC, inconsistent within Photoshop, the inconsistency is basic, bad design and is frankly embarrassing. I truly worry about the future if nonsense like this can makes it into a release.

Why would they change the function of the scaling tool that has been done a certain way for years and years... Can adobe make an update to put it back the way it was? It is causing a lot of frustration with me and everyone I work with. The other part that is strange to me is that they made this change just in photoshop— illustrator still scales proportionately while holding shift... Please make an update to put photoshop scaling tool back the way it was ... Thanks!
