With every new version Photoshop get a new bug for liquify and smart objects.

This time when you editing and save/update smart object witch have mask it mishandles the smart liquify effect. So you have to disable the mask before editing it.

Same thing happens if you enter to edit liquify. You have to disable the mask, otherwise its distorted.

The issue that Earth logged was fixed in the 20.0 release.

Can you post a file with an embedded smart object that reproduces this issue?

Similar bug came back in 20.0.3 liquify in smart object. Only right now you dont need a mask. All you need is to open and save back smart object. Same thing with 8 and 16bit conversion,- liquify changes appearance after conversion.

yes, i logged a bug for this about a year ago and there's been no response from the devs. You can either disable or also unlink the mask as a workaround.

Photoshop had issues with coping and 16bit conversions in older versions on same topic. I would watch out for that too.

Thank you! I will try your solution - disable mask before editing. I have this issue with liquify, puppet warp and smart objects after cropping, sometimes after transformig, but now i simply edited liquify effect and the mask and I didn't noticed  what exactly mishandled so my liquify effect.
