P: Files created with Frames from shapes don't retain Frames

Phil, in your document, the problem embedded smart object has different content than what is shown in the layer in the main document. The content inside the smart object is smaller, and coordinate problems follow when trying to do things with the layer, such as Free Transform, color conversion, etc.

Just opening the problem smart object shows this mismatch. We don't know how it got in this state. Can you tell us more about the history of this document, or give steps to reproduce such a document from scratch?

In the case of this particular project, where I've been given specific setting for a "rich black" and particular color profile by the printer, the best way to do these layout pages is in CMYK. Even if I set the black in an RGB version of the file, when it's converted from RGB to CMYK, the color properties change. But what I'll do for now is work in RGB for any pages that need custom frames, then save for later and convert another version to CMYK setting and save as TIFF. Just one more step, so not horrible. I would do it all in InDesign except that there are custom text layers and FX that break the border of frames on most pages, so it's "easier" to work those all in Photoshop for maximum image and color control

Do you have to work in CYMK ? You can work in RGB, with everything available, with a preview in your final CYMK profile (check the view menu) then convert the final file to CYMK .

Ahhh - okay. I was working in a CMYK master document, and bringing in RGB files that would convert on placement. Seemed fine and saved as TIFF okay, but when master file reopened, shape frames gone. But I guess that makes the workaround pretty clear - save frame master file as RGB for future editing. Thanks!

It's the conversion to CMYK that seems to trigger it. Don't even need to save it for the image to disappear.

Thanks guys - Legacy Compositing was not on, but I will try that and report back. On a deadline, so doing a quick video will have to wait until next page that needs custom frames. Here's an example. Image on the left was saved as TIFF from master PSD CMYK file. When that file was opened again later - it looked like what you see on right. Method for custom frames: draw shape with pen tool, convert to frame, place image.

Phil, could you check if legacy compositing, in Photoshop>Preferences>Performance
You moght need to restart and reopen, and while you are there, try to create one frame, and see in one created in legacy does reopen correctly.

Hi Phil, I'm not able to reproduce this. Could you post a video of your process? It might help us repro.
