P: Intermittent brush + mask problems

Attempts to paint with paintbrush in to a mask results in my effect being applied to large, uncontrollable square area of the canvas, disregarding the brush size and features. Large chunks of image are edited, ignoring the brush settings. Toggling layers on off, moving layers around, using history panel, sometimes corrects this. Sometimes must quit and relaunch photoshop. Occurs often and randomly, making work difficult. The latest in a series of cc 2019 photoshop bugs.

Hello to all.

This problem has been recurring since years now. The only advertised solution is to turn off the use of a graphic processor in the Performance tab. But this is in NO WAY a solution : Photoshop becomes sluggish since the performance is not set to use what is available (at least on my laptop MBP mid-2015).

I do not understand the lack of priority to address this correctly, since this can literally ruin hours of work on complicated photos. There is no coming back from this flaw, unless you saved your file just a second ago and can close it and start again working on it.

This MUST be corrected, PLEASE. I pay for your software, I expect to have a working bit of program, at least no one that will ruin my work.

27/07/2021 edit : it appears saving, closing file and re-opening it solves the issue (even, if the mask problems have already shown up before you saved), but do you consider this normal ? Why isn't ADOBE MAKING AN OFFICIAL RESPONSE TO THIS AND ADDRESSING IT QUICKLY, instead of just recommending us NOT to use graphical processor ???

I'm sorry everyone that this is not solved.

I have been using the legacy rendering engine for the past few weeks and I am no longer having these problems:
Preferences > Performance > [X] Legacy Compositing

This works for my '17 MB Pro's Radeon 560 but some of our PC's graphics cards do not have graphics processor settings in this panel; so we rolled them back to earlier photoshop.

I am trying to follow the tour of photoshop 20.0.1, the project teaching masking.  I get to the part where you select the brush tool to paint around the blue pencil to mask, and I get nothing when I paint using my touch screen.  HP Envy x360 Getting up to that point in the tutorials worked fine with my touch screen.  Not sure if it is only touchscreen, I don't have a mouse on me at the moment.  But I see no cursor when I try to paint during this tutorial on the mask.

What OS/version are you running on? Would it be possible to get a screen recording of what you're seeing?
