P: Layer Effect overlays are not updated during free transform until commit

When editing a text layer that has layer effects applied (specifically Gradient Overlay with “Align with Layer” enabled), intermittent rendering glitches occur. While modifying the text content, the entire layout may flicker.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Place any background image on the canvas.
A detailed image makes the glitches more visible compared to a solid color fill.

  2. Select any font and type some text.
Interestingly, the appearance of the glitch depends on the chosen font.

  3. Apply a Gradient Overlay as a Layer Style to the text layer and enable the “Align with Layer” checkbox.

  4. Now try moving, scaling, or duplicating the text layer before double-clicking it to edit the text.

    😅You will notice visual glitches.
If no glitches appear, change the font and repeat step 4.

Hi @artur_0832 the team has come back with:

“If customer is noticing that the gradation is off and shows lines with solid colors while the text is selected, this is as designed when GPU is turned on.

After the text layer was free transformed and not committed, moving the text layer changes the color of the text. This is as designed also.

After committing the transformation, it should show the gradation matched with the background.
At least these are the behaviors Ps has had for many years.”

    Hope this clears this up.

    Thanks,

Thank you for the update. I’m disappointed that a company of Adobe’s size considers this behavior acceptable. In 2026 GPU workflows are standard, and it’s concerning that they still cause these issues. I expected this forum to help resolve long-standing bugs rather than dismiss them with “it’s not a bug, it’s a feature.” Replies like this make me doubt Adobe’s commitment to improvement.

    Hey @artur_0832 ,

Thanks for the report and pointing this issue out. It is true that this behavior with layer effects not updating has been around for some time and doesn’t seem to be confined to text objects. The team is working on some GPU updates and hopefully this workflow issue will be solved in that work.

In the meantime we have logged a bug on this. Really appreciate you taking the time to create a video and write up the problem you’re seeing. Stay tuned.

    Regards,

    PG

Thank you @artur_0832 for the info… testing here and we can not get it to error as what you are seeing.  Can you share the exact font/size used? If you can repeat this everytime, let us know those details so we can as well.

    Thanks,

This bug is easily reproducible on different devices, both in the beta and in the release version. Here is the recording from the very beginning.

At 0:40 you can notice the first glitch, then at 1:12, and again after I changed the font at 1:27 and 1:45, and at 2:02 — especially clearly at 2:09 and 2:15 ⚠️⚠️⚠️.

What’s interesting is that the type of glitch directly depends on the font being used. Here are the fonts I tested:

    1. Arial Black (the effect is less noticeable)

    2. Designer

    3. FREE FAT FONT

Hi @artur_0832 let’s make sure there isn’t a corrupt preference causing this.

    1. Try resetting Prefs for the Beta:
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ Photoshop Beta Settings (Mac Ventura)
    /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Adobe\ Photoshop\ \(Beta\)\ Settings (Mac)

    C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop (Beta)\Adobe Photoshop (Beta) Settings

Launch BETA Photoshop While Pressing The Keyboard Shortcut
With Photoshop closed, press and hold Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and then Launch Photoshop the way you normally would.
    https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

    2. It may help if we could see your Photoshop beta System Info. Launch Photoshop beta, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

    Thanks,

The bug can be reproduced in the release version 27.3.1 in exactly the same way — you can verify it yourselves.

At 1:27, you can see that when changing the font and double-clicking the text, a glitch appears.
