P: Notify MAC OS of CR3 image support

My query to Apple support... When I want to open a .CR2 image file with photoshop, I right click on the file, select open with, then click on 'photoshop.app' in the list. I have upgraded my camera and now shoot CR3 files. When I try to do the same with CR3 image files, photoshop in not in the list of applicable apps? I can open the file with photoshop by selecting 'Other' and finding photoshop in my applications folder, but this is a bit inefficient. I could go into CR3 file info and set the default 'open with' to photoshop and select 'change all' but I prefer to keep this option set to the preview app. How can I add the photoshop app to the 'open with' pull down list for CR3's as it appears for CR2's please ?

Apple support response... You can't edit the Open With list, it is created by the system by polling all your installed applications for their list of files that they can open. If a program claims it can open CR3s, it is added to the list. If it lacks a notification file for the system to read it won't be added. There is nothing you can do about either situation--you can't add, subtract nor rearrange the list.

Can you add CR3 image files to the Photoshop OS notification list please?  (I notice Lightroom made the list) TIA!

Hi @jpmcadams, sorry you are having issues.

If you could share screenshots of your process and the steps you are trying to do, the team can take a look and see what might be happening for you.

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Thank you,

I've never reported a PS bug....is this the correct place to get this problem in front of a PS dev/support ?

No, I guess I am not being clear, photoshop does not have to be running, and I can configure the OS Finder to open CR3's via photoshop in the file info default if I wanted to double click, but I choose to leave the default with the preview app. I want Adobe PS to register CR3's with the OS so that I can choose photoshop from the drop down, just as it does for CR2's. I can open the CR3s by selecting other and hunting down the app, but it would be nice if adobe would fix this.

Once Photoshop is running, when I double click on my raws after doing this, they open in ACR:

IF Photoshop isn't first running, this will not work because Photoshop isn't running and it 'thinks' you want to open it which it can't do without ACR. But once running, a double click on the CR2 in this case, opens it in ACR.

When I double click the CR3, the image is displayed by preview.app just as I configured it to. The problem is that Adobe Photoshop 2022.app is not notifying the OS that CR3's are supported so the Open With pull down list does not include photoshop as an option. My original txt...

Then just double click on the CR3; doesn't Photoshop launch and then ACR?

First off, is your specific camera listed here?
