P: Overwriting Smart Objects

Hello,

Thanks for sharing the image!  That really helpped in tracking down what is going on.

  • The reason that youre edits are preserved, for the smart object, on the bottom layer, is that the underlying image is a PSB file which supports layers.
  • The reason that your edits are getting combined, for the top layer,  is that the underlying image format is a .png file.
    • This file format, is one of several formats that do not support layers.
    • In order to save the file the layers must be collapsed down to a single layer.
    • It is unfortunate that Photoshop isn't giving one a warning about this first and maybe giving some options for dealing with this.

WorkAround:

To preserve your layers on smart objects:  save out the underlying image to an image format that supports layers, .psd (Photoshop) for example.  Then use that new image for your smart object.

Does this help?

Tal

Hello Cory,

sorry butI don't understand because the file I shared with you with WeTransfer is a .psd, I named it "BUG.psd", I just check the file. I do the steps with this same file and the bug appears every time. I will share a new link by mail to be sure.

Thank you for info and steps. Do you have a file to share that you are seeing this with, or could you share the steps to create the file/SO to test with? They files I recieved were flattened .pngs.

Thank you,

Cory

Of course:
1. Double click on the first layer, the smart object will open.

2. Create 2/3 new layers with text and vectorial forms for exemple.
3. Select all the layers and make a new smart object.

4. Close the smart object.

5. Open the smart object and all is collapse.
If you do the same steps with the second layer, the smart object will not collapse.

I hope I'm clear 🙂

One thing we notice @RatcheK76  is that your memory allocated for Ps is at 95%. It is suggested not to go over 70%.

Thank you for sharing the files, could you walk us through your steps or workflow that we can do with your files to try to reproduce this issue?

Thank you,

Cory
