P: Photoshop 27.10: "Edit in Photoshop" from Lightroom Classic & Lightroom Desktop does not load image with Denoise

Photoshop 27.10 has several serious known bugs. One of them:

They are known and the developer team is working to fix these. In the meantime go back to versoin 27.9.1

I have found a possible Lightroom and Photoshop integration bug.

If Photoshop is already open before I start Lightroom, then I select a photo in Lightroom and choose Edit in Photoshop, the edited file is saved correctly to disk after saving in Photoshop, but it does not appear back in the Lightroom catalog.

If Photoshop is closed before I start Lightroom, everything works normally and the edited Photoshop file is added back to the Lightroom catalog after saving.

There is an alternative tactic when the normal “Open in Photoshop” external editing workflow does not work from Lightroom Classic. This is to create, within LrC, a named external editing preset which refers to the Photoshop executable (with choices associated for bit depth, file format and colourspace that are independent of the main settings for PS external editing).

When the usual Open in PS workflow happens, the creation of an image file on disk is deferred - until you later save one (or don’t). Conversion of Raw (if needed) and application of edits done in LrC are subcontracted out to Adobe Camera Raw to do; then the results from that are passed to Photoshop in memory as an unsaved image. This reports as document title the file name from the original source file: “NEF” or whatever. A TIFF or PSD is not made until when (if) you Save. It sounds as if something in that has not caught up with newer LrC functionality. Perhaps an ACR / PS version update is now needed.

When instead you use Edit in / [your named preset] from LrC, it is Lightroom Classic which executes the Raw conversion as needed, applies edits, and saves out an image file to disk. LrC is certain to be able to do this correctly all on its own, and no external dependence on ACR is involved. 

After LrC has saved this file, it imports it straight away. The external editor (maybe Photoshop, could be anything else) is then told to open the new file as a separate operation. So what you then see is an already-saved file. This you can further update, and then save changes to - or not.

Just started happening today after update.  I have uninstalled both applications and reinstalled with no change.

When I edit my photos in Lighroom and I want to pull them into Photoshop, I will *right click, choose ‘edit in’ and then ‘edit in photoshop’. I choose ‘edit a copy with lighroom adjustments’. In the past I have had no issues with pulling in dozens of photos at once to edit. However, after the newest ps update a week ago, if I pull more than one photo into ps as described above it will crash the app. It will also pop up the raw editing window which used to not happen. I have changed nothing with my workflow or settings, the only change is the new ps update. Any bug fix in sight or work around? This unfortunately is slowing my workflow way down.

I lost quite some time with this issue of denoise and Photoshop.

Why can you guys test things better before releasing?

I am relying quite too much on Lightroom Classic and Photoshop for my workflow.

Thank you for the detailed reports and reproductions here. It has been really helpful in isolating the issue quickly. I’ve filed this for the engineering teamto investigate and prioritize. 

In the meantime, here are confirmed workarounds:

• Downgrade to Photoshop 27.9.1 via the Creative Cloud app (Other versions > 27.9.1).
• Alternatively: Temporarily disable Denoise in Lightroom Classic before sending to Photoshop, then re-apply back in Lightroom, or it using Camera Raw as a filter inside Photoshop.

We understand this disrupts a core editing workflow and appreciate your patience. We'll update this thread as we have more information.

It’s not specific for open as layers. A single denoised file also doesn’t open.
