P: Photoshop hangs when using smart objects

No ideas what can be done here? The combination of smart objects and the Camera Raw filter seems to have some issues.

I've tried to narrow it down. It seems this has something to do with Adobe Camera RAW when it is used on a smart object. When I drag a smart object, even a very small one, with Camera RAW apllied into another file, it takes about 10 seconds until the smart object appears on the other canvas. It also happens, when I drag a normal layer (no smart object, no Camera Raw) into a file that HAS some layers with smart objects using Camera RAW applied. So this has to be a recent change in Camera RAW that causes this slowdown. With a PC having 64GB of RAM and a GTX3060 dragging around small smart objects should not even be noticable.

I doubly annoyed now, because I just wrote a detailed answer and upon sending it, I get a 504 Gateway Timout and all that is gone. Nice. I'm not writing that again.

Anyway. I disabled the extensions and plugins. I dragged a small smart object from one file to another and Photoshop is unrespnosive for about 10 seconds.

Before all that, with the plugins enabled, Photoshop even completely crashed when doing the same. I've sent the crash report, maybe it helps. But there's clearly something wrong with quality control at Adobe. It's not the first time, that updating Photoshop was a big mistake. While not adding anything interesting with those updates (and I'm a photographer as well as an illustrator, so there are a lot of options), it constatntly leads to bugs being introduced instead. And that's not just me, I've followed the other threads as well whenever I struggle with new bugs.

There's a number of number of optional extensions/panels and traditional plug-ins (Nik, etc) which could be causing problems.

Go to Preferences > Plug-ins... and uncheck "Load Extension Panels," restart and see if you can reproduce it. If it still happens, you can re-enable and restart to load the extensions again.

Launch Photoshop while holding down the Shift key, click "Yes" to skip loading 3rd party plug-ins. See if you can still reproduce problem. If it still happens, you can relaunch Photoshop to load the plug-ins.

Try pasting into a txt doc and attaching to your reply. Sometimes the system is buggy with long posts.

A major assumption and one that you cannot make until you try what has been suggested or (impossible) you have the PS source code and that of the GPU manufacturer. 

This is why disabling GPU is an option as more and more functionality moves to the GPU in newer versions of many Adobe products.

Of course, you can roll back a version or three when GPU support was lesser, and maybe the issue goes away.
