P: Photoshop Notes appear bigger than normal in a open window.

Hi community,

When I add a note to a psd file, The note 'icon' looks quite bigger than it should be. This gets more troublesome when I add more notes.
Attached below is a screenshot at normal, maximised window view and at a resolution of 1920x1080:

On zooming in the .psd file, the icon size of the notes get bigger and overlap each other, if zoomed in at a certain level. This happens when the 'graphics processor' option is on and off as well. This very inconveninet when having multiple notes!

When I disable the graphics processor option, the icon size of the notes look normal as seen below.

I cannot disable the graphics processor option as I use the animated zoom and other features for digital artwork. I also need the notes function to keep track of the process and update the changes as per the feedback I receive.

Is there a workaround for this where I can reduce the size of the notes' icons without disabling the graphics processor?

My graphics card drivers are upto date and Photoshop confirms it's compatibility and updation in the graphic cards compatibility window.

I am using Win 10 and PS 23.4.1

Thank you for your help 🙂

The issue still remains in Photoshop 2025 (v26.4.1) @Sameer K @Mark.Dahm @CShubert

Hi @Mark.Dahm Thank you so much for your feedback and the updates about what's happening about this issue, behind the scenes. I am sure a lot of users will be benefiting from your updates as well, knowing that the issue is being worked upon, and a solution is around the corner.

"I find them to be egregiously large (just my preference), but have not had issues opening. Perhaps the larger icon you get with the GPU enabled is the 'right' size?"

: So, this is my photoshop setup at 1920x1080:

As you can see, this the icon size of the notes, with the gpu enabled, as shared in my first post. While this size is somewhat ok at 100% preview of the document and fewer notes, as we zoom in and zoom out, the notes icons look bigger and get distracting. I believe the smaller icon size (as seen in the second image of my first post), that becomes available after we disable the gpu, is the actual size.

To clarify, are you saying that the large notes icon is difficult to open?
: I have the notes window open and use the ctrl key while having the notes tool selected, to activate a note, which is shown by the pencil icon on the activated note. Sometimes, I have to press the ctrl key 5 - 10 times to get a note activated. I could use the notes window to toggle left and right between notes, but it's more time consuming when you have multiple notes and the one you want activated is in the middle of the whole set of notes. Plus going to the notes window, time and again, takes you out of the workflow, whereas ctrl clicking the note icon you want, is much more efficient.

I have never had the expereince using the small icon size for activating the note as I don't use photoshop without the gpu, until right now. Just tested it, and the small icons get activated with a single click on the very first time, when gpu is deactivated!

I was refering to the small icons being missed on being clicked, because of their small size, but I think that's not much of a big issue. I could miss clicking on it once beacuse of it's small size, but if it opens on the first ctrl click, I am sure I wouldn't miss clicking it the second time, or atleast, that's on me and not on the software 🙂
I think the small size icons are great at the size they are currently, just wish it worked with gpu enabled.

Hope this helps.

Hi @drakedesign , we are aware of the issue; I've discussed options with the design team, and reworking the notes to provide on-demand preferences for the notes icon would be some work that it's not clear would pay off vs. other areas of the product (though I know it's key for you).

To clarify, are you saying that the large notes icon is difficult to open? I find them to be egregiously large (just my preference), but have not had issues opening. Perhaps the larger icon you get with the GPU enabled is the 'right' size?

@Mark.Dahm The possible problem with small icon option, would be to be able to click on the small notes to activate them. Currently, clicking on the notes even in their large size is a hit and a miss sometimes..

Hey @Mark.Dahm ,
I think the 'large' and 'small' icon option would help. If I understand correctly, the 'small icon' option will give me what I am expecting, while gpu is turned on, right?

Apologies for the delayed response.

Hi @drakedesign ,

I presume that the smaller size is the preferred size with the GPU on? Would it suffice to have a 'Small' or 'Large' icon setting for the notes tool?

There is some logic backing the notes tool right now that dynamically scales the size of the icon based on operating system settings, but it only seems to come into play in the non GPU mode on Windows (if you have the scaling setting over 100% then you get the larger version of the icon, else it's smaller).

Is there any need to provide more scaling options than 'small' or 'large' for your workflow?
