P: Photoshop v27.10 UI, Canvas and screen Flickering

  • August 31, 2026
  • 1662 views

Environment:

  • OS: Windows 11 64-bit

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-14700K

  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2000 Ada Generation

  • Photoshop Version: 27.10

  • Driver: NVIDIA Studio Driver

Issue Description: Immediately after updating to Photoshop v27.10, severe UI and canvas rendering issues began occurring during normal editing. The symptoms include:

  • Rapid flickering where UI elements and the canvas temporarily disappear and instantly reappear (no black or white flashes).

  • When navigating menus (e.g., Preferences), the text briefly vanishes and comes back.

  • While editing, the active photo disappears from the canvas and instantly reappears.

  • The flickering happens extremely fast, rendering the application completely unusable for daily work.

  • This issue is isolated to Photoshop and does not occur in other applications.

Troubleshooting Steps Executed:

  • Verified the monitor is connected directly to the NVIDIA GPU, bypassing the Intel iGPU.

  • Forced High Performance GPU assignment for photoshop.exe via Windows 11 Graphics Settings.

  • Disabled Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) in Windows.

  • Disabled Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO) via the Windows Registry.

  • Disabled GPU Compositing and OpenCL in Photoshop's Advanced Graphics Settings.

Results: The rapid flickering persists despite all GPU and OS-level troubleshooting. The issue is only resolved when Use Graphics Processor is completely disabled in Photoshop Preferences, or when rolling back the installation to v27.9.1. This strongly indicates a regression in GPU rendering specific to v27.10.

Hey All! Thank you all for reporting this and for the detailed system info; it's been very helpful.

We've been able to reproduce the UI/canvas flickering issue in Photoshop 27.10, where the screen intermittently darkens and flashes internally. It has been filed with the engineering team for investigation.

For now, these are the workarounds:

    • Downgrade to Photoshop 27.9.1 via the Creative Cloud app (Other versions > 27.9.1).
    • Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance > uncheck "Foreground Composite Cache" and "Use GPU Compositing." from Advanced settings. (Suggested, not verified)

Colors shifting on canvas is another issue that has surfaced with PS v27.10, it is being tracked here:

We understand this disrupts the core editing workflow and appreciate your patience. We'll update this thread as we have more information.

Yup, can confirm. Recent beta works fine.

Only rollback to older version helped me. Tried every other solution.

It doesn’t seem to be happening in PS Beta 27.12

hi there, have had the same issue on v 27.10 - i researched the issue with one of the ubiquitous ai chat bots, and was advised that this is A KNOWN ISSUE - a gpu-pipeline rendering bug, and will apparently be fixed by v 28.0 (roughly Oct to Nov 2026). I have rolled back to v 27.5 and the issue is not present. kind regards, mm-etc...

I get that as well, but not just with Photoshop.  Just a brief black screen that quickly goes away.  I am using an RTX4080 with 591.86  I have just checked and it turns out that is a Game Ready driver and I must advise people at least once a week or so that the Studio driver works best with Photoshop.

I am not sure that I get any other issues, and don’t know if the driver is the cause of my blackouts, but I am going to change my driver right after I post this.(to 597.06)

Something similar is happening to me on Windows 11, Ryzen 9 9950X3D and RTX 5090.

What worked in my case, as quick workarounds:

    - Disabling "Use Graphics Processor" entirely, or
    - Enabling "Older GPU Mode (pre-2016)" with GPU acceleration on

Performance drops slightly, which is annoying. Hoping they fix this soon!

Title: Screen blanks for ~0.5s repeatedly with GPU acceleration on (RTX 5090 + Alienware AW3225QF) — fixed only by "Older GPU Mode"

    Summary:
With "Use Graphics Processor" enabled, the whole display goes black for about half a second and comes back, repeatedly, while using Photoshop. It only happens while Photoshop is running with GPU acceleration on. Enabling "Older GPU Mode (pre-2016)" in Technology Previews fixes it completely.

    System:
    - Photoshop: 27.10.0 (20260824.r.26 9d9635d) x64
    - OS: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit, build 10.0.26200.9457
    - CPU: AMD, 16 cores / 32 threads (integrated AMD Radeon Graphics also present, no display attached to it)
    - RAM: 64 GB
    - GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 (32 GB)
    - NVIDIA driver: 616.92 Game Ready (32.0.16.1692). Also reproduced on the NVIDIA Studio driver.
    - Main monitor: Alienware AW3225QF (32" 4K QD-OLED, 240Hz), firmware M2B110 (latest), 150% scaling
    - Other displays: XPPen 27" pen display. Issue also reproduces with it turned off/disconnected.

    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Enable Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor (default advanced settings).
    2. Leave Technology Previews > Older GPU Mode unchecked (default).
    3. Open a document and work normally.
Result: the display blanks for ~0.5s and recovers, repeatedly.

    Expected: no display blanking.

What I ruled out (issue persisted in every case):
    - HDMI 2.1 FRL cable and DisplayPort 1.4 cable (both original)
    - Refresh rate lowered to 60Hz
    - Windows HDR turned off
    - 30-bit Display on and off
    - OpenCL off, GPU Compositing off
    - NVIDIA per-app profile set to Fixed Refresh (G-Sync off for Photoshop)
    - Game Ready and Studio drivers
    - Secondary pen display disconnected

    Workarounds that fix it:
    - Disabling "Use Graphics Processor" entirely, or
    - Enabling "Older GPU Mode (pre-2016)" with GPU acceleration on.

    Additional info:
    - No nvlddmkm TDR events (ID 153/4101) are logged in Windows Event Viewer at the time of the blanks, so it does not appear to be a driver crash/reset.
