P: Photoshop v27.10 UI, Canvas and screen Flickering

Environment:

  • OS: Windows 11 64-bit

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-14700K

  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2000 Ada Generation

  • Photoshop Version: 27.10

  • Driver: NVIDIA Studio Driver

Issue Description: Immediately after updating to Photoshop v27.10, severe UI and canvas rendering issues began occurring during normal editing. The symptoms include:

  • Rapid flickering where UI elements and the canvas temporarily disappear and instantly reappear (no black or white flashes).

  • When navigating menus (e.g., Preferences), the text briefly vanishes and comes back.

  • While editing, the active photo disappears from the canvas and instantly reappears.

  • The flickering happens extremely fast, rendering the application completely unusable for daily work.

  • This issue is isolated to Photoshop and does not occur in other applications.

Troubleshooting Steps Executed:

  • Verified the monitor is connected directly to the NVIDIA GPU, bypassing the Intel iGPU.

  • Forced High Performance GPU assignment for photoshop.exe via Windows 11 Graphics Settings.

  • Disabled Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) in Windows.

  • Disabled Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO) via the Windows Registry.

  • Disabled GPU Compositing and OpenCL in Photoshop's Advanced Graphics Settings.

Results: The rapid flickering persists despite all GPU and OS-level troubleshooting. The issue is only resolved when Use Graphics Processor is completely disabled in Photoshop Preferences, or when rolling back the installation to v27.9.1. This strongly indicates a regression in GPU rendering specific to v27.10.

      Hey All! Thank you all for reporting this and for the detailed system info; it's been very helpful.

      We've been able to reproduce the UI/canvas flickering issue in Photoshop 27.10, where the screen intermittently darkens and flashes internally. It has been filed with the engineering team for investigation.

      For now, these are the workarounds:

      • Downgrade to Photoshop 27.9.1 via the Creative Cloud app (Other versions > 27.9.1).
      • Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance > uncheck "Foreground Composite Cache" and "Use GPU Compositing." from Advanced settings. (Suggested, not verified)

      Colors shifting on canvas is another issue that has surfaced with PS v27.10, it is being tracked here:

      There have been several similar reports on version 27.10, which seems to come with multiple regressions. This thread I believe is about your issue in particular. Unfortunately, for now the main workaround is rolling back to 27.9.

      We’re all paying each month for a working piece of software.  Rolling back to a previous version means the new Light adjustment is no longer available.

      This bug is over a month old now.  Adobe needs to come up with a fix or give us a partial refund on our subscription.

        Working in 2020 iMac running mac OS 26.7 Tahoe. Using Photoshop version 27.10.0. 

        When working in Photoshop every time I make an adjustment within an Adjustment Layer. Problem seems to be related to the last (or latest) Adjustment Layer I have applied. It seems like when I move any slider within any Adjustment Layer, Photoshop is turning off and turning on interactive preview. Very difficult to explain - never experienced any such problem in previous versions of PS.

        I had exactly the same issue with Photoshop 27.10.0 on Windows 11.

        My system:

        • Intel Core i5-14400F
        • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6 GB
        • NVIDIA Studio Driver 616.92
        • Windows 11

        Photoshop 27.10.0 produced frequent UI/canvas flickering during normal use. Capture One and other applications worked normally.

        I downgraded to Photoshop 27.9.1 and the flickering has completely disappeared. I am using the same GPU, driver, monitor and Windows installation.

        This seems to confirm that the issue is specific to the 27.10.0 GPU rendering changes rather than a hardware problem.

        27.9.1 is working perfectly for me.

        So what steps does one have to take to roll back to Photoshop 27.9.1? Have never had an occasion to go back to a previous version so not quite sure how to do this. Do I have to uninstall v 27.10.0 first but then where would I go to get  PS 27.9.1?

        Your help would be appreciated.

        To roll back to the previous version:
        Open the Creative Cloud app on your desktop.
        Click on Apps in the side bar.  Then choose Your Apps.
        You will see Photoshop listed.  Click on the 3 dots to the right of PS and choose ‘other versions’.
        Choose to install the previous version.
        Note: this will turn off auto update, so PS will no longer update to a new version unless you tell it to or turn auto update back on.
        Also note, the new Light layer will no longer be available as it was new in the most recent version.

        The other option is to simply uncheck using the Graphics Processor in PS until a fix is found.  To do this:
        Open Photoshop
        Click on Edit, choose preferences, then choose Performance
        Uncheck the box which says ‘use graphics processor’ and click OK.
        Restart Photoshop.

          This is currently a known bug in version 27.10. The remedy for now is to go back to version 27.9.1.

          I am a more than 20-year user of Photoshop and suddenly I am also recently noticing this SAME PROBLEM.  I open my image and while working on it, the entire image will suddenly become quite dark.  I have NOT changed the brightness or depth of color.  I may be resizing or flattening the image. . .NOT working with the brightness or contrast or color AT ALL and arbitrarily the image suddenly turns very dark. . .then without any input from me, flickers back to its original aspect of light.  This happens MULTIPLE TIMES in the course of my work. It Is VERY ANNOYING. I will certainly appreciate direction to correct this.  Thank you!

            I’ve been having this problem for over a month now. Whenever I’m editing in Photoshop, the screen will randomly turn dark (see attached photos). It will last for a little bit and then the screen will return to normal, but then continue the cycle.  I’m not sure what would be causing this. It is only happening in Photoshop, I also use Lightroom and don’t have this issue. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as it’s very hard to use photoshop like this.

              I’m experiencing the same thing, but the flickering affects my entire screen—even when I’m using other applications; just having Photoshop open is enough to trigger it. It’s horrible!

              The color contrast issue should now be resolved in the latest Photoshop Beta build. Please let us know if you continue to see the issue after updating.

              If you are using v27.10 then it is a known bug. The link below is the bug report thread and there are two workarounds. One is to revert to 27.9.1, alternatively you can try going to Edit > Preferences > Performance > uncheck "Foreground Composite Cache" and "Use GPU Compositing." from Advanced settings.

              Desktop XPS 8930, two internal drives, C is 220 GB, 2/3 full , D is 931 GB, 1/8 full , have a NVidia GTX 1650, a couple extended drives attached via USB.
