P: PNG Images Opens with Distortion

From time to time, when I open a png image, it will appear as bright, distorted lines.

I have deleted all Photoshop preference files, uninstalled the app, reinstalled it and restarted the computer. Does not prevent it from happening.

When it happens, I can quit Photoshop and reopen it and the png appears correctly. But then it will happen again later that day or the next. Rinse/Repeat.



Very annoying. Please get better quality control Photoshop. CC seems to get progressively worse in terms of bugs.

    Hi Ross,

    Let me know if you see it again after restarting Photoshop. After making a change to Preferences it is necessary to restart Photoshop for the change to take effect (I edited the instructions also).

    Which suggestion did you try? Did you disable extensions in preferences? Just want to be clear since this thread is long.

    This did not resolve my issue. Still had to restart Photoshop for the png to load properly

    Hi Everyone,

    Thank you for including your files and system info to help us get to the bottom of this issue. It has been submitted to our engineers and we're working on a fix. In the meanwhile, if your workflow permits disabling extensions, that seems to resolve the issue for everyone who has attempted it.

    1. Go to Preferences > Plug-Ins > Filters & Extension Panels and then uncheck the boxes in the screenshot below
    2. Restart Photoshop and open your png again.

    Hi Hannah. It’s true the files are not originally corrupt, but when opening the file (transferring it to memory), the app clearly corrupts or mis-decodes the file. Previous versions of Photoshop never exhibited this issue, so workarounds are clearly not a long term solution. Hopefully this has been escalated up to engineering to resolve ASAP. This issue could be due to a memory bug with PSD, a png library issue or something else entirely. In my 15 years of using this app, it’s the most disruptive issue I’ve encountered. Opening PNG files are imperative to many users daily routine.

    I have not tried to see if saving a jumbled PNG file after opening it up then bakes in the corruption, but it would not surprise me if that was the case.

    Hi Hannah - just tried disabling Preferences > Plug-ins > Allow extensions to connect to the internet and Preferences > Plug-ins > Load extension panels and it's cured the problem.
    I restarted, then turned them back on, restarted again and it's now fine! Thanks Hannah

    Hi Amy,

    I'm sorry for the frustration over your pngs not displaying correctly, but from all the examples I've seen the files themselves shouldn't be corrupt, simply distorted. Are you able to work with extensions disabled? In all the examples I've seen that makes the distortion resolve.
