P: PS 25 'Can't open .psdc file "the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop'

I'm having trouble accessing a cloud file that I just worked on 15 hours ago. It was all created with the latest, updated version of photoshop. I have not changed anything in my system, but I am no longer able to open this file. It's a .psdc file.

I've tried making it available offline only, online only, and downloading it to my desktop.

I've tried opening it in the app, and in the browser directly.

I've tried re-uploading it into the browser from my computer.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled photoshop.

I've updated my entire pc, and yes I've restarted everything in between all of this. I've tried everything I can think of.

I'm able to open all of my other files, except this one.

Here are two errors I'm seeing.

This one directly in the app:

"Couldn't open "[filename].psdc" because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."

And this one in the browser version:

The browser version get's close to opening it, I see the graphics, and then it clears the screen and prompts with this error.  -- "Sorry, we couldn't open your document. (-25040)"

Would gladly take any advice or suggestions here.

Hi @Lipelampejo, could you supply public links to a few sample PSDs? To better help you with this issue, we would also like a few more details. Can you send your system info? You can find your system info by going to Help > System Info, copying and pasting it into a text file, and attaching it here. Thanks! ^CH

I had a problem earlier that I ended up fixing, but also created even worse problems

My cloud starts like this, but doesnt really do anything.. I have a bunch of cloud PSDC documents that I cannot preview, or open or download..

If I attempt to open it from creative cloud, It does this, attempting to open and load them on the web browser yields the same results

Eventually the creative cloud turns into this.. and hitting the reload button does nothing

I have a bunch of different documents that are available, and a bunch that arent

I have been trying to fix this issue for 6 hours to access some documents I need, I cannot get the library to fix itself, I cannot get it to work across 3 different devices (2 windows and a macbook) I've tried to fix things locally, Signed out, signed in, uninstall, reinstall, refresh preferences, deleted temp files, cc cleaner tool, removed old libraries I hadn't used

Nothing is making any of them work.. please help

Hey, @QKayos. I've merged your post in the parent thread where we're investigating this.

Could you supply public links to a few sample PSDs via direct message on my profile?

Thanks!

I managed to fix it by downloading different versions of Photoshop till one worked, which was Photoshop 2024. I believe my file was is also really big (5GB) and too much to handle. I would work with smaller images in the future.

Hi everyone,

I’m facing an issue with some of my .psdc cloud files. When I try to open them, I get this error message:

"Couldn't open 'filename.psdc' because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."

Here’s my setup and what I’ve tried:

  • I’m using the latest version of Photoshop on both macOS and Windows (Creative Cloud is up to date).

  • I’ve tried opening the file:

    • By double-clicking it from Finder/File Explorer

    • Through File > Open in Photoshop

    • From the Home > Cloud Documents tab inside Photoshop

    • Via photoshop.adobe.com

None of these methods work. The issue only happens with some .psdc files, not all. Other files open just fine.

I’m logged in properly to my Adobe account, Creative Cloud sync is working, and the files appear normally under my Cloud Documents.

Has anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE.

I have ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 26.5 version installed to my laptop. I am on a Windows Surface Laptop.

For the past 3-4 months, I have been having these issues & within the last few weeks, it has gotten worse.

1. If I create a new project, do work, save it, & then come back the day after to maybe fix something, all of a sudden the "Text needs updating", according to the photoshop system.

2. If I create a new project, do work, save it, & then come back the day after to maybe fix something, It won't let me open the file, because according to photoshop,"it's distorted now, or the project can't be opened in this version of photoshop." *I have tried reinstalling older versions, & it still says the same thing as when I was in the most recent version of photoshop.

3. If I am in a project and I try to change something, I can't even click on a layer, a tool, etc. without it freezing up and then photoshop just closing on me & then I have to open it back up, and it does the same thing.

4. If I try to open a project and it's saying it's distorted and/or it won't be able to be saved, but i can open it, when I try to open it, it loads, but then it doesn't actually open.

I have attached some proof of these issues, that I do have, with this post.

I DO NOT HAVE STORAGE ISSUES, MY GRAPHICS CARD IS UPDATED, & MY LAPTOP IS UP-TO-DATE.

PLEASE HELP, BECAUSE THIS IS AN IMPORTANT TOOL IN MY GRAPHIC DESIGN BUSINESS, I HAVE PROJECTS THAT ARE IN-PROGRESS & I NEED TO FINISH. THANKS, IN ADVANCE!

@Kyera25299045qs1u

The videos from your phone are too small, too shaky, and move too quickly so that it's hard to register what we are seeing.

Can you try taking a video using QuickTime Player, included with your Mac?

https://support.apple.com/en-us/102618  Scroll to "Use QuickTime Player" and slow down.

Does this happen only for files in the Cloud with .psdc or does it also happen with files on your computer with .psd?

If my computer had that many issues, I would consider resetting preferences manually after backing them up.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I have a file that was saved as PSDC and now can't open it. I have tried opening it through the link you sent but it is still not opening. Any guidance on this would be most appreciated.

Hi, I had the same issue today, could it be because my file size is too big? I have over 60 images in multiple artboards.

Hallo,

Datei passiert... Davor hatte ich nie Probleme.

Meine Hardware: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-11900KF @ 3.50GHz 3.50 GHz, 64 GB RAM, Nvidia 3080ti, Win 11.

Ich nutze die neuste Version von Photoshop.

Ich hoffe, dass das Problem gelöst werden kann.

Gruß

Tom

Hey @tomb94506010

It looks like you're saving the file as Photoshop Cloud Document. Does this error happen on specific device or version?
