P: PS 27.3.0 Using the Gradient Tool on a Layer Mask doesn't work properly now.

While using the Gradient Tool (PS 27.3.0) on a Layer Mask, Mode set to Multiply, this doesn't work properly now.

The work around- I have to create a new Group of my layer then add a layer mask and set Gradient Mode to Normal in order to for this to work. This bug is new since I updated PS to 27.3.0

Hi @PauloJC  are you talking about Ps Beta or Ps release version?  This is the Ps Beta forum so if that is the app you are speaking about, please update to the latest and let us know if this persists.

    Adobe Photoshop Version: 27.4.0 20260201.m.3398 df09e8f  arm64 (beta, PublicBeta)

    Thanks,

I’m talking about the PS release version.
We are a big company and we only use stable versions.

On a Layer Mask, the Gradient Tool is bugged. If I draw a single line with the tool and then move that line at all, it will stack multiple gradients like it’s recording every movement I’m doing with that line. It’s acting like a paintbrush. I’ve attached a video reproducing the bug

I’m on Photoshop version 27.3 and Windows 11 version 25H2

Based on your video, i can confirm the bug. If you want a workaround, just disable the transparency so that your grad goes from black to white. There’s really no need for transparency on a black and white layer mask.

Hey, @AndresGarcia84. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I’ll need more info to help you figure this out. Could you record a short video and share it with me, along with the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload & attach here.

There is another post about gradients here. Please go through it and verify if it matches what you see:

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks!

Sameer, thank you for reaching out. I’ve tried and looked into “everything possible”, any suggestion or input would be highly appreciated.

Attached is the system info and short video. You will notice how the opacity slider no longer has any effect and it seems to be stacking or even multiplying every new radial gradient within that same layer mask, even when I scroll though different gradient options it adds them together. In the past I have gradually worked detail in from the base layer. Really odd, feels like it happened all of a sudden. I updated apple OS and even did a hard restart of PS.

@Sameer K any idea or suggestion regarding this glitch/bug? Have any other users recently reported anything similar happening? Wondering if it is something isolated on my side

Same here, and when I revers the gradient with the button in the mask layer properties the whole mask goes black. Definitely a bug here.

Bracketed images, one on top of the other in the form of layers > generate layer mask > in order to reveal detail from the image underneath I have always used a radial gradient to start slowing working in detail. Seems to all of a sudden have a glitch and if I move that radial gradient around it actually starts stacking and the opacity control no longer has an effect (it is from black to transparent)

It works properly in Classic mode, but not the “new” mode. Then some funky stuff happens that has no relation to the actual tones set in the gradient. Yes, clearly a bug.

Odd behaviour when applying a transparent gradient mask in photoshop 2026 v 27.3.
