P: PS 27.9.1 & Later Content Aware Fill – "Crop Expand Image"

Hi,

Expanding the image while using the Crop Tool (the color in this case, about a solid gray) using Content Aware Fill - makes wrong color, in my case after expanding a lighter frame at the previous image edge borders and a lighter gray color is used for the expanded areas. Is this a known bug? I’ve downgraded to 27.8, no issues there.

Thank you,
Patrik

Adobe. If you read this full thread. You see there is clearly possible to reproduce this. As other users have reported. I expand backgrounds on several hundreds of images a month. This does not work above version 27.8. There has to be a change made since this version? When do you actually consider to look into this issue? The feedback here from Adobe is absolutely useless. I’ve been making videos and posting system reports for about zero useable response. Now in the thread confirmed others have this issue too.

Hi, Have you been able to find a solution, any working update? I’m getting really annoyed of the way Adobe handles this issue, It’s a fundamental feature in PS and not a “hyper super ai generative fill feature”. Really tired of this.

Have you been able to pin this down to a particular set of conditions?

Like OS and version

hardware (CPU, GPU, drivers)?

Does it happen with the beta version (if you have tried it).

I don’t use Content Aware Fill as much as I used to as I have a lot of Gen Creds, but I just tried it in 27.1 (release) and 27.12 (beta) and it seemed to work OK

What am I looking for?  Does Photoshop hang? Looking at the OP I think it was hanging when rotating the image with the crop tool.  Is that what you are seeing?

How big is the project?

I’ve looked through the thread and only seen reference to Mac hardware and 16 bit images.  I am using Windows 11, but my gut tells me that if every Mac user out of the 42 million people with Photoshop, was having the same issue, we’d hear more about it, so can you tie it down?

This sort of issue is often GPU related, so have you tried this setting?

Note: I have no idea what hardware you are using.

Hi @nathalie0D4C,

Thanks for reaching out, and apologies for the experience. I’m glad to hear that version 27.8 is working well for you. Whenever you have a few minutes, could you please share a few screenshots showing the before and after results of Content-Aware Fill? This will help us better understand the behavior you were experiencing.

It would also be helpful if you could share your System Info with us. You can find this by going to Help > System Info in the application. Please copy and paste the full report here.

Once we have these details, we’ll be able to investigate the issue further and assist you accordingly.

Bonjour @Srishti Bali

Too bad by Adobe to not fixing this fundamental feature in Photoshop.

I’m a full time photographer and retoucher (for over 20y) I have serious issues as well with CAF expand image (using the crop tool) since version 27.9. The pixels/expand get distorted, it doesn’t use the surrounding pixels correctly. There has to be a change made in Photoshop since then? This is a feature I use daily doing several hundreds of images a month, so I’m stuck on version 27.8. When can we expect to see a fix?

Dear Adobe,

Content Aware Fill, to expand backgrounds is extremely useful. At least in my workflow. Since version 27.9 I have not yet been able to get it working. I’m back on 27.8 where everything is working. Was there a Graphics Engine update recently, (in 27.9) could be causing this? I mainly see the error in slightly larger files (4000px and above) and 16 bit (the format I work in). If you try to replicate, do the background CAF several times and scale the image and try again. It’s occasionally working ok, but 9/10 not. I hope you consider this as a important issue. It’s in the basic fundamental function in PS, we have had for many years now. I’m a full time photographer an retoucher, so at the moment I’m not able to update PS, which for me is a major issue working professionally. I have reported on the issue earlier but without any solutions. I give it a “last” try here. Attaching the System Report and a Screen Recording.

Regards,

Patrik

Was not the Graphics Engine in Photoshop rebuilt recently? Introduced in v27.9.1?

If this is the case, is this not a highly likely reason for the suddenly appearing graphics related error, which it all looks like. As mentioned. All is fine in 27.8.

M1 Mac Studio + all the latest Mac OS, deleted/reset of PS prefs, tried Beta with same Issue, I strongly believe my system are all ok, the bug is not in my system or computer.

I have the same issue on 27.10, I work on a MAc Studio M4, 64 1TB, never had this issue till I updated to 27.10. I did a lot of reading and tried a few things, I got it to temporarily go away but it keeps coming back. it seriously disrupts my workflow, sure hope you have a abug fix update soon.

Same here! My workflow has been almost doubled and it’s slowing me down significantly. I’ve been trying to work around it but it’s hard when I have to force quit often and have to re-edit my work again.

Hi Patrik,

Yes, if the same file/process works correctly in 27.8 but produces the lighter edge in 27.9.1, that does sound like a regression in the Content-Aware Crop/Expand behavior.

As a workaround, you could expand the canvas first and use Content-Aware Fill manually. I’d also report it to Adobe with the exact steps and a sample file so they can reproduce it.
