Still nothing...... this is so ridiculous. Why am I paying a monthly fee for a program who's basic save function is broken??

FIX THIS NOW PLEASE! This is one of the most expensive programs on the market yet you ignore pages of customer feedback, such awful service.

This is not a good workaround. You stand a dangerous risk of loosing your layered file with this method. Photoshop was working fine before this update and the worst thing is this was never an issue to even require updating. Now I have to continuously delete previous JPEGS & TIFF files just to prevent having multiple copies, WTF Adobe? Also because of this my Indesign files are going haywire not updating to new files because the new files somehow has F'ing "COPY" added to the name so, guess what, NO UPDATING there either. That's it, i'm switching to Affinity. I think photosho's days are done finally 😕😕

WORK AROUND: Working with a PSD layered file today, Aug 21, 2020.

(1) "Save" your PSD file
(2) "Flatten Image" (Layer --> Flatten Image)
(3) "Save As..." and replace the JPG file
(4)  Close

(5) If using one PSD file to generate multiple images, you can "Open Recent >" and repeat, replacing the variation you want.

Still not great, but maybe faster than manually changing names and deleting old files?

Using iMac 27", Mac OS Catalina 10.15.6, Photoshop 2020 (21.2.1)

Still broken as of today. In Catalina 10.15.6, Photoshop 2020 (V 21.2.1) .. super annoying and a waste of time. Especially the "do you want to replace?" and clicking yes makes a "copy" version. 10 months ago this thread started. Where is the fix Adobe? Apple - Mac OS?

I think this is a problem with the new Catalina Mac IOs, because it has started to occur since I upgraded to this version. I also have a PC and in Windows 10 working with the same version of Photoshop this problem does not exist. Adove: fix this problem as soon as possible, it is inadmissible.

I have also run foul of this by uploading an incorrect file to competition and as part of a qualification panel - this really needs to be fixed now.

Any resolution to this? I agree that Adobe needs a swift smack to the head if this is an intentional 'feature'. Stop trying to out think your customer's work process.
