setting opacity of multiple group layers sets opacity of included layers.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create 3 group layers, each containing 2 text layers:

    > group 1
      - text 1
      - text 2
    > group 2
      - text 3
      - text 4
    > group 3
      - text 5
      - text 6

  2. Collapse the group layers

    > group 1
    > group 2
    > group 3

  3. Select all group layers
  4. Select the marquee tool
  5. Press the key '5'.

Expected:

  • All group layers are set to 50% opacity
  • The text layers remain at 100%

Actual:

  • All group layers are set to 50% opacity
  • The text layers in all but the bottom group are set to 50%

I tested on Win10 and had the same results. I filed a bug report linking to this thread and included my verification of the issue.

Well, »sense« is a strong word ...

One thing, though: Both of Peter and Yves appear to work on Mac and so do I – so I wonder if there is a possibility that it might perform differently on Windows.
What is your OS, eartho?

Apparently Photoshop’s selection of Layers in the Layers Panel does something a little surprising – it seems to disregard whether Groups are expanded or closed (in the regard of selecting Layers anyway).
So shift-clicking selects the Groups AND the contained Layers (except for the lowermost Group) while cmd-clicking only selects the clicked Groups themselves.

So for now you may want to just assume that Groups behave as if they were expanded no matter whether they are or not.

Indeed, when cmd-click it works as expected. Good to know but I consider this to be a bug (and a rather annoying one in my workflow).  How did you come to this assumption?

I expect the problem is
  1. Select all group layers

Try not shift-clicking topmost and lowermost group, but cmd-clicking all the groups before changing the opacity.
Does it make a difference?
