P: Some brush presets only work with certain tools (eraser, brush, clone, etc)

Since Adobe brought brushtools into the Brushes panel, unexpected tool changes (and color changes) can happen. But they did give us a way to see in advance if another tool or color has been assigned to a particular brush tip. You have to have Show Additional Info enabled (checked) in the Brushes flyout menu and set your panel wide enough to see if a tool or color has been assigned, but then for any brush that has a tool setting—other than the Default Brushes, which all use the Brushtool—the icon for the tool itself will get displayed.

It's a tradeoff between offering us some advantages in having them combined and tool settings more obvious,  and requiring that because of that, we have to watch out for a changes. The Cmd-Opt kbsc is there to override the tool settings and just apply the brush tip. I'm sorry it isn't working on your computer. I hadn't heard Windows users I know complain about that, but it's something I hope someone can help you fix.

Many of us think they messed with something that wasn't broken in order to make it better, minus the need to pay more attention when selecting a new tip, but you can still use the Tools panel for tools and only install brushes that don't have tool settings into the Brushes panel. Not ideal for you since now there's an effort you didn't used to have to make, but it is possible.

I don't think Adobe can (or imo, should) walk this one back. It's worked well for a lot of people. And so long as they keep the Tools panel and make it very easy for you to create sets for yourself, you can keep your brushes with tool settings separate from your brushes without tool settings.

none of the bright ideas listed above work.  not ctrl-alt (stupid windows), i have the latest updates (considreing this thread is over a year old).  yet, nothing fixes this BS.  i choose a damn brush and it FORCES it to be a paintbrush or an eraser. 

adobe really f'd up on this.  STUPID WASTE OF TIME MESSING WITH WHAT WASN'T BROKEN.

What's wrong with Adobe Photoshop software development process?

The new resize behaviour was driving me crazy and now this. I select the eraser tool, choose a different brush and... voilá! It changes the eraser tool to the brush tool. The cmd + option solution... Why using a complex shortcut to fix this?

Why are you doing this to me and all the users? It's driving us crazy. Almost 20 years using the software and I feel that Adobe has no respect for its users.

Agreed! Seems to work for some but it sent me down the bend. Do pop over to my thread to upvote it though; trying to get some traction so they'll see it!

Same. Beyond that; started using Procreate on my iPad for most professional work until I finally bit the bullet and sat down for three hours converting every brush. Agony...

Well done! I couldn't work out where you could do that. 
My workflow just doesn't work anymore so I'm still using 2017 for now...

Hi, I just want to continue this thread because the Adobe reps/experts/etc on this forum seem to have deemed it a bug/problem that was fixed.
I want to clarify (perhaps on behalf  a lot of frustrated people) that we are all already aware of the Command+Option+Click function to change brushes without changing tools, as well as the ability to toggle "include tool settings" when defining a NEW brush. Neither of these resolve the fact that this "feature" has thrown a wrench in the workflow of every veteran Photoshop painter.

The new way that brushes and erasers now work in Photoshop means that I can no longer update the program. It has TOTALLY ruined my workflow and I'm currently using the 2017 release. I'm paying a fortune and can no longer update.
It used to as simple as using the brush, changing tool to the eraser and the same brush tip would become the eraser. Now this doesn't work. Not happy at all.

Yes, indeed.  I do not understand their reasoning.  When a change like that is made, it can take much time to discover it and figure out what exactly is happening.  In this case, I probably have a full days work into it - and being self employed, it is just wasted, frustrating, unpaid time.  It would help greatly if Adobe's tech support was better.  This issue could have been solved in 5 minutes if their support had a clue.  We pay for that support in our CC subscription and are not getting our money's worth.
