P: Spot Channels do not Save automatically because?

I go through all the trouble of building Spot Channels and Photoshop doesn't always save them. I have to do "save as" and make sure the "Save Spot Channels" box is checked. Which sometimes it is- but at random it is not. I do not know what causes this - but it is infuriating. Sometimes I open my file - the spot channel is gone- but the alpha channels I created are there. Alpha channels take a lot less effort to create and Photoshop saves them automatically- why aren't Spot channels saved automatically. I feel that anything I create should save no matter what. If I hit save- everything in the file should save. Spot channels should automatically save. If I didn't want them there, I would throw them away.

I've never lost any channels on saving. If this is happening to you regularly I would suggest raising it in a new thread along with full system details, Photoshop version details, and as much information as possible about the file structure and steps to reproduce, so that others can try and replicate. Include in that information what format and drive you save to e.g. is it a network drive?

Tagging onto the end of a 9 year old thread which already has information  from staff saying it was fixed, and has not had anyone comment about the problem since 2015 is unlikely to draw much attention from developers.

I actually do my work in regular channels first and try to make sure that they save properly in the original and as a backup copy, so it isn't only not saving my spot channels. After I have a file that did save the regular channels, I convert them to spot and save the file as the original and a copy again to make sure that those spot channels save before closing the file. Yesterday, I was distracted by another issue and did not get a chance to save and open my copy to ensure the regular channels saved properly before I left for the day. I came back in this morning and opened my file to see that all of my channels (other than the RGB) were gone. They had not been converted to spot yet and were just regular channels. Sometimes, I have had to copy each channel into a layer and save the layered file, then I copy and paste each layer back into channels of a new file because sometimes Photoshop just refuses to save my extra channels in particular files at all, no matter how many save and save as attempts. I wish I knew why this was happening. It happens to me a LOT, which is why I save extra file copies and have my process. I'm just frustrated because yesterday I didn't get a chance to do my usual big process to ensure channels aren't lost, and of course, they were lost.

I've never made spot channels, but can these be copied to regular channels?

In that case a script might be possible that checks if you have spot channels and duplicates them into regular channels. This script could be set as an event script on closing any document.

It's a workaround of course — not a real fix.

It has not been fixed in the current version of CC. I still randomly have my channels not save. Because of the frequency of this error occuring, I have gotten in the habit of saving a copy of my file in a different folder location and then I open the original again to make sure everything saved before I close the files. Most of the time, channels are saved properly. Some times, especially when I'm in a rush and forget to save my backup copies, it does not save the channels. This will randomly happen both when I have not yet converted my channels to spot and saved and also after I have converted my channels to spot and saved. When will this issue be fixed so that Photoshop saves ALL information? Why would the program let me spend hours working exclusively in the channels to just not save any of the work I did? I am using this for work for screen print separations and the glitch is wasting company time.

This issue was fixed a while back. It should work correctly in current versions of Photoshop.

I found where the problem with saving Alpha and Spot channels is causing people issues.

I create a PSD file and I work on it with layers and alpha channels. I save (as I work on it). I have checked "Alpha channels" and "Layers" in the save box that pops up. I cannot click "Spot Colors" as it is grayed out.
Now, when this design is approved/finished. I start making spot channels. I work for a while, saving (as in "save", not "save as") often. But when I close my work, and then come back later to continue, I open it, and it is missing the spot color channels I had done. The alphas are there, still.

Basically, if I do not hit "Save As" and resave the file with Alpha Channels and Spot Colors checked, it will delete my spot channel.

I did another test. I made a file with ONLY layers. I hit save with only the "Layers" selected. Both the spot and alpha boxes are grayed out. Then I go back, create two channels, one spot, one alpha. And I hit SAVE. I closed it and opened it. No problems.

Hopefully this can help you guys pinpoint the error to fix the problem. I know to hit Save As between adding alphas and spots, but sometimes I still forget and I lose my work. If you guys can do a hotfix for this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Oh well again thanks. I wasn't aware that I AM getting a warning, I guess I will have to watch for that. Love how how Photoshop likes to tell you what is or isn't happening to you. I will have to tell my coworker, he must also now be missing the warnings.

Again, we are testing a fix for the issue that Jeff described.

And no, that behavior has not changed between versions at all.

Have you done anymore on this? Now I don't even get a warning since I've upgraded to CC and I've lost some stuff since I wasn't aware of this. It used to at least pop up when I tried to close and say it wasn't fully saved. Now it just closes and loses my spot channels.

You should get the warning before you close the document - because not all of it has been saved.

And we are testing a fix for what Jeff described.
