Issue: Stroke distorting on Ellipse when using the Layer FX's.

Photoshop version: Adobe Photoshop Version: 24.1.1 20230112.r.238 4bbfa7a x64
OS: Win11 version 22H2 (OS Build 22621. 1265)

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open a new document
  2. Use the Ellipse tool to create a circle shape (i.e 300px x 300px). Set fill but no stroke.
  3. In the layers panel select FX > Stroke
  4. Set the stroke to Outside and the size to 60.

Expected result: Stroke should maintain perfect circular form the same way it does when setting the stroke on the shape itself without using FX.

Actual result: The stroke becomes wavy when using the Layer FX options.

Set the Position:Inside on the Stroke Layer Style panel. It will fix the problem!

@Creative.Collab the team has come back with this is not a bug but working as expected.

"The stroke in layer effects has to work from imperfect information. It just has a grayscale image and interprets the distance from the edge as that value, which does not hold true, especially on edges. As the distance map grows large it amplifies this imperfect data, thus what you are seeing. There is nothing actionable here, outside of suggestions to use geometry."

Thank you,

Cory

Thank you for the excellent post and steps to reproduce. We see the same thing here and will pass this on to the team to look into.

Thank you,
