P: Vector Smart Object Group Resizing Crashes CS6

Basically, the title says it all. When I have a "Group" of Vector Smart Objects and I attempt to change the pixel dimensions using the dialog boxes in the menu bar during Transform Mode, Photoshop crashes. To be exact with a step-by-step:

1. Select layer of a group (folder) of 2 or more Vector Smart Objects.
2. Press [Control][T] to enter Transform Mode.
3. Select the "chain-link" between the "width" and "height" dialog boxes.
4. Right-Click the "width" or "height" dialog box to change to "pixels".
5. Highlight the numerical portion of the pixel dimension (to retain the "px").
6. Type in a numerical value for the desired pixels.

Immediately upon typing a number, Photoshop stops and, after a brief moment, pops up a window which says:

"An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred. Photoshop will now exit."

The hardware that CS6 is installed is a "new" MacBook Pro 15" OSX 10.7.5, 2.6 GHz, 8GB RAM, 1GB video. This is a work computer provided by my employer which has other security and networking software installed and running that I cannot adjust or bypass, but it wouldn't make sense for any of this to interfere with a Photoshop transformation.

This is also the same exact procedure for resizing that I have used on different computers within CS3 and CS4, which never had a problem. Using CS6, this problem only occurs with a "Group" of Vector Smart Objects and does not crash when resizing single Vector Smart Objects using the pixel dimension dialog boxes. This is also the only instance that I am aware that causes my Photoshop CS6 to crash.

I honestly don't know if this is an actual Photoshop problem or a deficiency of this MacBook. When Photoshop closes, it asks if I want to send an error report (which I always do), but to Apple and not Adobe. However, after months of sending error reports to Apple with no response or resolution, it's time to question Adobe about the problem.

Is there a fix to this specific problem?

Chris,

I could probably accept this reason if it happened at other times, but it only occurs with this specific procedure of resizing a group of Vector Smart Objects. It doesn't crash/exit resizing any other type of layer with the dialog boxes or when dragging the transform handles on the Vector Smart Objects in question.

I also get no problems processing filters or any other type of intensive action.

However, if this is the case, how do I remedy this? I don't feel the disk is damaged as the computer is fairly new and I have absolutely no other problems with it.

With new Crash Reports leading back to may email address, I assume that no matter what is causing the problem, and as long as it shows up in the report, I will receive an email reply and find out for sure.

Jeffrey,

I submitted two crash reports today, but I used my work email address. To keep from getting spammed, I attached am image of this address. Let me know when you get it and I'll delete the image.

Thanks.

That's not a crash, but Photoshop trying to exit after a system error.
Usually it means a problem with the scratch drive (like a damaged disk that returned errors when we try to read or write the scratch files).

I just tried the file on my Macbook Air running PS 13.0.1 on 10.7.4. No dice. I haven't jumped to 10.7.5 on this machine, so I'll do that and try again shortly.

Hi Paul,

I'll try your file now to see if I can reproduce.

Sometimes crash reports don't have quite enough detail to resolve, unless we have an email to follow up with steps, we can't always track down the source.

Just to confirm, you were able to get it to crash and submitted it with your gmail email address? (I can have the team look in the reporter and pull up the bucket searching the email address you used)

Jeffrey,

Thank you for your reply. In answer to your questions:

1. Yes. Version 13.0.1 x64.

2. Yes. I had to backtrack and check my Crash Reporter settings, which was set to "Don't show this dialog again and always send crashes to Adobe". I changed the setting to prompt before sending and after "causing" another crash of Photoshop, I did see that there was no email address entered. I added an email address this time, but would like to point out that Adobe Crash Reporter has been automatically sending logs every time Photoshop crashed, which accounts for dozens of crash reports that resulted in no fix to date.

3. This sample successfully crashed when attempting to resize the layer named "Group 3": https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4799256/Temp...

Three things:

1. Is Photoshop is Up-To-Date? http://adobe.ly/PS-Up-To-Date
2. Have you submitted a crash log with your email address? http://adobe.ly/gNJWVY
3. If yes to the above, would it be possible to get a sample file that exhibits this behavior?
