Photoshop 2026 - Undo history limited to 5

Photoshop 2026 limits undos/history to a maximum of 5. This is a known bug in Illustrator 2026 that has a fix in progress, announced on a similar thread for that program. I can’t find an equivalent thread for this same issue in the Photoshop forums, so figured I’d report just to be sure it’s been recorded/made visible.

Not seeking assistance, I’m just going to go back to the previous stable version so I can keep scooting on my work, so this is just a report. Thank you!

    Not in recent memory anyway! Back in the dark ages Photoshop had one undo (sometimes). The History panel (called a palette in those days) was introduced in 1998.

    @honest_miss @Sophie21899903vc7c  I also don’t see this issue.

    Try to reset the Photoshop preferences

    Remember to back up your settings before doing the preference reset

    No limitation here either.

    Maybe it’s lack of free disk space, and it limits to 5 states to avoid filling the disk up? That would actually be a very sensible function.

    It's been doing it a while and I recently cleared lots of disk space, but I'll look into this. It would make sense!

    I get that too. It’s set to 50 in preferences but will only undo 5. So frustrating!

    As the others said. Undo is just another word for history state, and you can undo for as many history states as you have set in Preferences. Beyond that there has never been a limit to this.

    @honest_miss I’m not seeing the issue you reported, I’m using Photoshop version 27.3 on Windows 11, I just tested and can easily undo 20 history states using Ctrl + Z

    What’s your history state set to in the preferences

    Haven’t heard of or seen any posts about that for Photoshop 2026.

    Doesn’t seem to be an issue here with Photoshop 2026 (ps ver 27.2) or the just released 27.3 Photoshop 2026 update on either Windows or Mac.

    What version of Photoshop and operating system are you using?

    In Photoshop’s History panel do you have more than 5 history states showing, but your only able to go back five or maybe you could explain the issue in more detail so we can try to replicate it.
