Photoshop 25.9 - hangs when moving artboard

Hi there,

I'd like to report a bug, as in subject. This happens only in 25.9 version, I've downgraded to 25.7, and it doesn't happen.

When I have a document, with couple of artboards in it (let's say, ad banners) - when I try to move any artboard, and, after clicking on the name, and starting to drag it to move it someplace alse - when I try to pass it over any other artboard, or layer, which is outside the artboards - PS freezes.

It happens every time, in every document I've opened.

I found the "solution"!!!

If you turn OFF [Auto-size Canvas] option, then there is no more freezing/hanging.

The only side-effect is the canvas size. It stays as is, so if you try to move an artboard out of the canvas, then it will be "hidden".

But the easiest way is to make two empty artboards (when [Auto-size Canvas] is on) and put these to the top left and bottom right corner of the "needed" canvas and then turn OFF the [Auto-size Canvas] option.

Edit: if you move an artboard out of canvas (because you need more space), and it is hidden, you need to turn back ON Auto-size Canvas just once, then every artboard will be on that resized canvas, and you can switch back OFF, and there is no more hanging again

Pls let me now, if its works.

Hi @jaroslavholan ,

I completely understand how frustrating it is when core features like Artboards don't perform reliably, especially when they're central to your workflow.

Regarding the issues you mentioned:

  • Artboard lag/sluggishness: This is a known issue that our engineering team is actively investigating. We've identified that the slowdown is related to how Canvas Autosize recalculates layer positions when artboards are moved, particularly in larger documents with many layers.
Current workaround: Select the Artboard Tool, click the gear icon in the Options bar, and disable Auto-size Canvas. This eliminates the lag for most users. The only trade-off is that if you move an artboard beyond the canvas bounds, you'll need to temporarily re-enable the option to resize the canvas, then turn it off again.
  • Clipping masks affecting multiple artboards: This appears to be a separate issue from the performance problem. If you haven't already, we'd appreciate it if you could submit a dedicated bug report along with a sample file so the team can reproduce and investigate it independently.
  • Gradients inside artboards: A known gradient-related issue was addressed in Photoshop 26.5. If you're still seeing problems in the latest version, could you let us know which Photoshop version you're using and describe the behavior you're seeing? That will help us determine whether this is a new issue or a regression.

Regarding your point about core functionality vs. new features is valid and heard. I want you to know that separate engineering teams work on AI features and on core stability/performance; it's not an either/or situation. That said, I'll make sure this feedback about prioritization reaches the product team directly.

In the meantime, please make sure you're running the latest version of Photoshop and try the Canvas Autosize workaround, and let us know how it goes.

Thank you again for your patience while we fix this issue.

Thank you for your reply, but the Artboard issues have been around for years, and they still make Photoshop frustrating to work with. Are we expected to wait another 2–3 years before Photoshop finally catches up with the competition, where this works smoothly?

I'm aware of the temporary workaround, but it also slows down my workflow and isn't a 100% reliable solution.

Regarding gradients, you should try copying an artboard that contains a gradient and then moving it. The gradient becomes completely distorted. I've attached a screenshot showing the issue.

Regarding clipping masks, if you fill the background of an artboard, the fill is not limited to that specific artboard. Instead, it extends across all artboards, including the clipping mask.

Could you finally fix the long-standing issues with artboards after all these years?

Specifically:

  • Artboards that become sluggish and laggy.

  • Clipping masks that extend across all artboards instead of being limited to the current artboard.

  • Gradients that don't work correctly inside artboards.

The new AI features are nice, but many of us rely far more on these core features than on AI in our daily work. These long-standing issues significantly slow down our workflow and have a much bigger impact on productivity than adding new AI tools.

Please prioritize fixing the fundamentals before adding more AI features.

How is this still not officialy fixed when there are clear workarounds that proof this is a bug.

With auto resize canvas off, after moving the Artboards, does Image > Reveal All help instead of using "bounding" artboards in the upper left and lower right extremities?

Everyt time I move/duplicate an artboard PSD locks up and takes forever to come back. Anyone experience this? I deal with files that have a plethora of artboards, each 3000x per, and it seems that when I go to either move an artboard or drag copy to create dupe, it is falls on the edge of the "group" the software locks up until it figures things out (poorly). Can this be fixed!? Very annoying issue that happens daily.

Someone on another forum found a temporary solution.

The problem seems to be in the size of the sector.

When you create a new artboard the size of the sector changes.

and that change consumes a lot of resources.

so what I do is when I create a new file.

I create many empty work tables. With this, the size of the sector is expanded with empty tables, which does not require as many resources.

Then I disabled the "automatic canvas size" option.

When you do that you will realize that whether you create or delete new work tables, the size of the sector does not change.

and as a result. They move super fluid.

Be careful, don't leave the sector, because you can't work outside of it.

If you want to see the sector, you must enter the "view" "show" "sector" tab

For me it works when i make bigger canvas. I force it with positioning 2 seperate layers on top left and bottom right corrner.
After that you can position artboards in between layers.

When you need bigger canvas just move outer layer first to makes canvas bigger and than make/copy/drag artboards in between that area.

I dont understand why we need to figure it out some workaround for a basic thing like this.

The "infinite" canvas works flawlessly in Figma for example... in Figma!!! in a web-app!!

I'm sure this bug comes from the core of Photoshop code (the artboards is a newer feature), but they have a bunch of many from the subscriptions, they must rebuild from scratch if needed.

sometimes i just put 1 white layer like 10-100px big on top left and on bottom right corner so the canvas is bigger. but still that is not a fix 😕😕

did you turn off the Shrinkwrap Canvas option too?

and I'm not sure we are on the same page... layers doesn't count in this context, I meant the canvas not the top/bottom corners of the layers
