The "Remove Area" tool isn't working.

When I make a point-to-point selection and click "Remove Area" with AI turned off, the program freezes; it just hangs there and then displays a "program error" message. It happens every time. It used to happen only occasionally, but now it doesn't work at all. The other tools work perfectly!

My Photoshop version is 27.11; if I recall correctly, this issue started with version 27, though it happened less frequently back then. Lately, it fails most of the time and shows the error in the attached photo.
It happens with any document, whether new, with or without layers, PSD, or JPEG.

Sometimes it works, albeit slowly, and executes the command.

I’ve reset the tool and restored my preferences in the past; just to be safe, I also installed the "Remove Tool Advanced Components" add-on.

I’m using Windows 11 Pro 26H2.

This problem is really frustrating... I’m losing a lot of time while working!

I’m having the same issue in Camera Raw with the Remove tool as well; it just hangs and doesn't apply the command, so I end up cancelling the operation. Sometime it works!

Sorry to hear that the Remove tool is consistently resulting in a program error. Could you please share a few details to help us investigate this further?

Which Photoshop version and operating system version are you using?
Does this happen with all documents or only specific files?
Does the issue occur with a newly created document as well?
Please go to Help > System Info, copy the complete system information, and share it with us.
Also, if you recently updated Photoshop, please let us know which version worked correctly before the issue started.

In the meantime, please try the following steps:

Reset the Remove tool from the Options bar
Open the Creative Cloud desktop app > Apps.Click the three dots (...) next to Photoshop and make sure the Remove Tool Advanced Components are installed. Restart Photoshop and check whether the issue persists.
If that doesn't help, please try resetting Photoshop preferences (https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/desktop/get-started/settings-and-preferences/reset-preferences.html#:~:text=Manually%20reset%20preferences). Before resetting them, make sure to back up your preferences and any custom presets, actions, brushes, workspaces, or other settings that you would like to retain.

After resetting the preferences, restart Photoshop and test the Remove tool again. Please let us know the results.
