Updating to PS 27.8 reset preferences to old settings

I updated Photoshop from 27.7 to 27.8 via the Creative Cloud desktop app.

When I launched PS the home screen showed “recent” images which I had last worked on three months ago, and my settings were similarly backdated.

I fixed my setup by rolling back to 27.7 and restored preferences from before the update (thanks to Time Machine) but it’s cost me an hour’s work.

    Hi @philipking

I'm really sorry to hear about the time you lost and the frustration of having your older preferences restored after updating.

This is not something we normally expect. We've seen instances where preferences are lost or reset, but having Photoshop load an older set of preferences while ignoring the most recent ones is extremely uncommon.

Just to help us understand what might have happened, did you happen to have an older preferences backup on your system? When we reset app preferences due to an unexpected issue, we generally ask to preserve the existing preferences by renaming them as a backup. While it's very rare, it might be possible that Photoshop picked up one of those older backup files instead of the latest preferences.

I'm glad you were able to recover your setup using Time Machine and that the issue is resolved now, although I completely understand the inconvenience of losing an hour to fix it. Thanks for sharing the details, they're helpful for our investigation.

Thanks for your reply. I don’t have older PS 2026 settings on the system (except in Time Machine) but there is (or was, I’ve deleted it now) a preference folder for Adobe Photoshop 2024 Settings.

I didn’t investigate any deeper (needed to get back to work) but it could have been those settings. I was certainly missing a lot of configuration I’ve done recently (workspaces, prefs, brushes, etc) and the “recent” images shown on the home screen were for a job completed on 27 Feb this year, which was dozens of jobs ago.
