AAF Import Fails with message about a pproj file

When importing AAF files created by Media Composer some fail with a message that the file is invalid, however when opening [filename].AAF the error message is for [filename].pproj. It appears that the wrong parser is being invoked. This happens in Premiere Pro 25.x through to 2026.5.2. The current Beta version seems to be OK.

    Hello @emitime

Welcome to the Premiere Forum. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We need a little more information to help us identify the issue.

    • Do you know what type of AAF Media Composer made? Is Media Embedded or Linked to?
    • About how big is the AAF?
    • Would you be willing to share this AAF with us to examine internally? I could supply a private upload link via DM.

We could also still use the following information to try and match systems for an internal reproduction.

    • Operating System: Specify Windows or macOS, along with the version.
    • Chip (Mac Only): Specify which M-series Chip or CPU/GPU combo.
    • GPU and Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card and driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.

Thank you for running the tests already in Premiere versions 25, 26.5.2 and the recent Beta. It’s promising that it’s in the Beta currently but I’d like to verify it will follow to the stable release.

    Best,

    Amy

    In order:

OS is WIndows 11 latest updates

GPU and Driver (not relevant I think) Geforce GTX 5070 with the latest Studio driver

The problem is that some AAF files do not import and fail with the following:

    C:\users\tim\AppData\Local\Temp\[filename].pproj

The project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements

Both the working and non working AAF reference a single AVC-I 100 clip. and are Link to Media AAF files. Both will import as masterclips into a Media Composer.

A possible clue is that in the Beta version which does import the second clip, it is displayed as a sequence, each is a masterclip and in any case sequence import is supported.

I can supply the AAF files, however, the community board doesn’t allow upload of AAF files so you’ll have to send me a link or server address to upload them.

Private Message sent with an upload link. Let me know you’ve received it.

That is an excellent clue. Most AAFs I’ve made have always been from a sequence. I’ve never created an AAF from a clip. I would suggest trying an ALE for clips instead, if you’re just trying to import Metadata, or create a stringout of the desired Clips for transfer and export an AAF from that stringout sequence.
