Adjustment Layer Blacking Out Preview of Timeline - Prohibits PP from Closing Properly

I am using Premiere Pro 2025 on a home built PC (photo attached for specs)

I use an Adjustment Layer with VR Digital glitch for a short transition between elements on my timeline. While I have been able to successfully apply it to some transitions, beyond a certain point it has been blacking out the program monitor to the point where I cannot continue editing and have to restart. It also often prevents the program from shutting down properly and I can only close it with the task manager.

A few attempts I have already tried to remedy the problem:

  • Restarting the program and the PC
  • Disabling/deleting unseen clips that are covered by the viz where the transition is needed (on one attempt it turned the image incredibly low-poly with only a select colours before eventually going black again)
  • Clearing the Media Cache
  • Rendering the timeline (stops/skips the render at the problem area)

A post with a similar problem from 2017 mentioned changing the Project Settings Mercury Playback, but for me the only option available is: Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (CUDA)

The entire 50 series Nvidia cards are problematic across all video post apps, not just Adobe.

To the point that for the first time I've ever seen, an official Nvidia rep posted in this forum ... back about 15 September, that they were going to have a new studio driver out on the 30th that would fix their cards.

Unfortunately, all we got on the 30th was a new game-ready driver, that did not fix the majority of video-post issues. But they have now promised a Studio driver on October 14.

Sigh.

Premiere Pro 2025:  Same problem just started.  When an adjustment layer is added to the timeline, the preview turns completely black, even with a blank adjustment layer.  Has anyone solved this issue?  Thank you, Bob.

Hi @SM_91,

Thanks for the message. Welcome to the forums.  It's always frustrating when our reliable tools start acting up.  Are you able to make a screen recording of the problem?  Can you provide the specific effect for us to test with?  You can also try some of the solutions in this post: Adjustment layers with motion effects

I hope we can help you shortly. Sorry for the pain points.

Let me clarify that this is a regular transition that I have used for about two years and has never given me this issue, even when I was editing on a built with more obsolete hardware.

I've given nesting a try, and it seems to work better, but it will still black out the timeline after a few more applications

At times, people have had trouble with VR effects applied to normal video footage.

And some times nesting a clip, then applying effects, sorts things out.
